As the late, great RR put it, "There you go again".....
RF, what it boils down to is this:
Live & let live....
Just curious, but where are your benchmarks of immoral behavior derived from?
Would it be OK for gay people to raise those unmurdered, unwanted babies  ......JK

Haut, there's no need to take anything I say serious. The only reason I said it here was because if I said it in real life Texashotdog would punch me in the mouth. It's just all so much easier hiding behind my screen name.

Seriously, as the astute Mr PW2 has pointed out, these forums do not lend themselves to the presentation of treatises. Economic, political, social or otherwise. Do you really want to read a 25 page post discussing my reasoning as to gay marriage? Perhaps someday we can sit down in person and have these conversations. In the mean time we're reduced to delivering sound bites. And as you know, sound bites are more effective when they are shocking.

Despite my comments regarding reasonable agreement/middle ground, I find that I am often able to reach a reasonable consensus with my liberal brother in law.

By the way, you really do look like Matt Damon in that pic.

Ten reasons why gay marriage is wrong

1) Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning. Also apparently those homosexual animals have picked up some unnatural behavier

2) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

3) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.

4) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

5) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed.....the sanctity of Brittany Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.

6) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children.

7) Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

8) Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.

9) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.

10) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

Fair enough.... :)
I guess there is a resemblance...
But, since I'm older, doesn't that mean that he looks like me? :D

I guess I am just naive enough to think we can have meaningful discussion. I think it is good brain exercise and I think I might actually learn something, although that may seem unlikely to most  I don't get worked up by this stuff, it is more entertainment than anything, just like debating hull design or boating safety stuff . . .

HM,

My point was that people's tendency toward sexual orientation can be manipulated by societal stuff; TV, personal attitudes and even legislation. If the ideal is agreed upon, then shouldn't we all try our best to promote the ideal? Not to discriminate, but to lead . . . If anybody wants the interview I have a 16MB copy that I could email . . . just post your addy. She is definitely not "weak minded".

QC, I hear what you are saying, but I can't buy it.....
I think how people perceive sexual orientation can be manipulated, but.....
I don't believe that being gay is either a choice nor is it learned behavior.....
I think the only choice is either live in the closet or out......
Intellegence & weak-mindedness are not necessarily diametrically opposed....
One can be very smart & still be weak minded...
I noticed that she used the phrase tthat her professors "opened her mind".....
As opposed to a closed mind?
Sexual orientation is meaningless....
Unless you are disciminated against or persecuted for it.....
Thanks for the offer, btw......JK
We are all people....
To me, it's not a decision to be made by anyone but the individual. I draw the line in having my nose rubbed in the moral values and sexual prefences of others by ANY branch of government, or ANY other group or individual. I'll also refuse to be forced to "tolerate" the exploits of others, BY others.

Originally posted by Darth D Invader:

2. The issues of abortion be should taken out of the hands of the federal government and returned to the states?
Yes, outside of the criminal aspect of legalizing the act of taking the life of another human being.

Now having addressed both of those questions, I feel it nescessary to state that my political ideolgies have very little to do with those opinions, as they have more to do with morality, as i percieve "morality".
I'll not force gays to seperate, but won't "celebrate" their choice, nor "tolerate" a parade of gays down my street, without loud verbal oposition from yerz truely.
That constitutes the "having my nose rubbed in the moral values and sexual prefences of others" I eluded to above.

It's OK to be a loud mouthed bigot, as long as you don't discrimnate.... ;) :p
In Wa. state not only did the anti gay discrimination law go into effect Tuesday, but an initiative to defeat it next election also failed to garner enough votes to be put on the ballot!.......JK

I was reading along, and deciding to stay out of this all together. But these kinds of statements really get under my skin.

Obviously, America is not a theocracy. HOWEVER, it was founded by people that had a certain religious background, and the morality of everything they did was influenced by that religious background. The US is very accepting of all religions, but it is STILL FOUNDED IN CHRISTIANITY. "In God we trust" is on our currency for a damn reason!

I was raised a Protestant, but no longer go to church, nor really claim to be religious. But my personal beliefs on religion do not change the fact that this country was founded by Christians, with very good intentions. Christianity is at the very core of our country, but it clearly states that it will not officially endorse any one religion.

As best I can figure, the founding fathers expected everyone, regardless of religion, to be rationally minded, and have a certain set of values, that would be simliar to their own. And a look at most(that's most, not all) religions shows this to be true. So, in a way, the values of a certain religion(Christianity) are imposed on everyone living in this country. And I don't think that's a bad thing at all.
