1. How warm should the cylinder head be on a 1994 Evinrude 70hp at idle, 10 min of running? Should it be hot, or just warm to the touch? I ask because I cleaned the carbs, and tuned.

2. Will I be able to recognize a slightly lean running condition by checking the spark plugs colors after 10 minutes of run time both idling, midrange, and wot?

Any help would be much appreciated

Re: 2 questions

You should be able to hold your finger to the cylinder for a few seconds before you have to remove it. So yes, it will be "hot". You may be able to verify a lean condition on one of the plugs after running it at WOT and then shutting down and checking the condition..

Re: 2 questions

Thank you, I had an infared thermometer, and it was reading 149 degrees while at idle, and when at midrange it read 122. Spark plugs were brown, and slightly saturated, I just didnt know if a lean condition would show itself that quickly

It sounds from your readings that it is running about right. What makes you believe it is running lean on one or more cylinders?

Re: 2 questions

I did cough a little before I cleaned the carbs. I didnt have and precursors for a lean condition, just investigating, and trying to be proactive. Thank you guys for all the help. This sight is awsome!!!
