I just had my lower unit rebuilt the other day and it is much better now. i put new oil in it and the first time i took it out, it shifted into forward and reverse so smoothly that I didn't even here a "thunk" into gear. yesterday i took it out again and I heard it "thunk" into forward and reverse. i was wondering if this is normal, or if i am getting water in the lower unit? we replaced all of the seals, so it should be water tight, but I am paranoid about this stuff.

also, how tight should the prop nut be? I didn't think it was supposed to be tight, so I just hand tightened it down and put the cotter pin through it, but I read on here that some prop nuts have to be really really tight. this is a 1973 evinrude 50 hp engine.

thanks you all!

Re: 2 quick questions about lower unit

The gears are not syncronized like in a car so some "thunk" is to be expected. Don't ease it into gear. Also check to be sure your idle is not too high.
The manual is pretty vague about the prop nut. It just says to tighten the nut securely, then continue to tighten it to align the holes for the cotter pin. Do not back it off
