I am thinking about putting a roller cam in along with a new carb and intake. My question is the price diffrence in the roller cam and the flat tappet worth the extra money. It is in a 20 foot open bow with a 350 sbc.

Roller cams allow for less friction and higher RPMs as a result. However, if the other internal parts don’t support the extra capabilities (like heads, valves, and exhaust removal), you may only see very little results. You have to understand that roller cams go very well with roller rockers and the list goes on and on. While the addition will reduce internal friction, that quite easily could be all you may see too... When building any engine, you have to decide exactly what you are shooting for and built to that design. Putting in just a roller cam with higher lift or duration capabilities could result in a more problematic engine without any increase of usable output, especially in a boat...

Cant put just the cam. you also need the lifters, lifter locks, and the threaded holes in the block for the spring plate otherwise your putting in a new cam only.
And without new lifters ,the cam can wear very quickly.
