Hi there, I have a 96 200 mariner efi, just had the water pump replaced, old one look fine but still replaced, and the tail tell pulsates when running, did this with old water pump. The water psi gauge jumps around from 5psi to 10psi. I had an over heat alarm the other day and shut it down for a while and started back up and the water coming out was rather warm. Should the tail tell pulse like this or is there something else going on.

My rpm guage is the other question, it reads fine one minute and then it starts to jump around to higher and lower rpm's the motor sounds fine and steady. Do I need another guage or is it something else? Thanks

Re: 2?'s on mariner

The water pulse is probably the thermostats opening and closing
The tach problem could be a bad tach or regulator going bad find the junction block on the engine for the stator wires 2 yellow wires and move the tach lead to the opposite yellow wire if that corrects the problem is the regulator if not it's the tach - Bob

The t/stats are on each head, follow the telltale hose to them, if you belive the engine is running hot replace them. Make sure the replacements have a notch or hole for water supply when the stats are closed or the telltale will only work when the stats are open

NO on removale, If the problem continues and is only at high speed the popit valve could be sticking also

Re: 2?'s on mariner

ok thanks for the info, my next question is I found were my poppet valve is and it looks like it will be really hard to get to, there is an electrical panel on the side were the poppet vavle is. I'm not to keen on taking this off unless I can take it loose without removing any of the connections. Thanks for the responses, I have been using outboards for years but haven't had to do much work on them. I do enjoy finding these new things out that I never new before and if I can fix or replace myself, It will save me a lot of $$$.

Never worked on a EFI like yours but ck and see if the whole panel assm can be moved by disconnecting the batt and removing the mounting bolts with the wiring left in place

Goto the BAM Marine site and look in thier parts book for a good view, but you really need to buy a OEM service manual if you plan on doing your own maintance - Bob
