2 Starcrafts in 2 months and 1st post.

Hey all,

So here's the story. My girl and I come back from vacation in the Adirondacks where my buddy has a nice little 14ft Duracraft with a 25hp Evinrude. Nice little boat had ablast and got the boating bug again. We talk about finding alittle 14 - 16 footer. 2 weeks after vaca she spots one on her way home from work. We check it out and pay $600 for boat, trailer and motor. A little research later it's a 1966 Mustang. Came with an 81 johnny 35hp. Did the usual stuff got it running like a top. This is where it gets interesting. At time of purchased noted that the floor was a little soggy. No biggy until a couple weeks later. I pulled the floor out and found the original glass floor. Started poking around. It was completely disentegrated. It was worse than wet cardboard. The stringers used to have wood but now it's compost. The short and the long of it is I learned alot more about outboards then I knew before that's a plus. I now have a lot of vintage parts in good shape. I was going to do a complete resto but I don't have a place to do it. Way to much glass work. I decide to start looking for a replacement in Aluminum ( the original thought ) I found a 1966 14ft Falcon in Mass. The guy went to FLA for the winter and won't be back until it thaws out. I found a 1974 16ft Holiday with an 1986 85hp Force (Triple cyl) paid $450 for the lot. Guy was honest it si what it is. I will be sanding and painting at some point and redo the interior. The wife does custom interiors for private jets. I'll post pics of both boats this weekend when I have sunlight. As for the parts I will post pics and put them on CL.

This forum is great I have gotten alot of great info from it.

Had to learn the hard way ??? Starcrafts are sweet little boats and soooo much easier to work on! You're right, There is a lot of great info on this site and these guy's are the best with lots of helpful info, But don't forget what Kev Said: Got to have pics (we can't let just anybody in...well almost)

Buy the trailer get a free ready to resto glass hull . The red one with the bad paint job is the new one. 1974 16 ft. Holiday. I can't wait to get this thing on the water. I think she'll go pretty good with the 85 Force. Motor runs great I'll winterize it this weekend and start gutting the boat and cover her up. Look forward to tips and ideas from the forum members. My plan is a full factory resto with a couple of extras. Should be a good time and also great spousal avoidance.. I thingk she'll do 35 to 40 mph. I had a 2000 21ft. Trophy brand new with a Merc 125 Saltwater that did 45 WOT and trimmed out. I went the opposite way I went smaller and I like it that way. This boat is going to be towed to The ADK's alot and only weighs maybe 1400lbs loaded. Trophy was over 5000lbs loaded.

OK it's been awhile but here is the progress so far. Last spring and summer I redid the floors,side panels and dash along with new seats and finally splashed it in late september. this year is the transom, and paint. I did poly resined the floors with 5 coats on the bottom and used white herculiner for the top. It is impervious to water and has a nice non skid finish. Any holes I put in the the surface I covered with 3m 5200. The side panels I poly resined also, and I found the almost identical ribbed side panel fabric to wrap them in. The aluminum trim peices I used stell wool on and painted with the Herculiner. The side pockets are also Herulined. I will be purchasing another gallon to finish the interior of the boat so it macthes the Red and White them. I will also be using the Herculiner on the topside along the gunwales and the closed bow. The top of the dash was done with a peice of naugahyde and thin foam glued down to the wood.The dash panel is a piece of red oak and I just sanded down the only peice of good wood on the boat and stained it that is the cockpit peice. Attached is the link to the videos of it running and all the pics I have taken.. the boat hit 37mph on Chrystal lake here in CT. It is a small lake and I think I could have gone faster if I didn't run out of space. This little boat literally jumps out of the water with that 85 HP Force.

I meant to say this to all on the Starcraft and Force forums the information I have gotten from all of you has no price. With out all of you I would have a no boat. It certainnly took longer than I wanted but last year was interesting with the weather. It would be nice all week and then rain on the weekends. I only have a drive way and an easy up. I will post more photos once I find them.

Looks great. Glad you added that bit about epoxy instead of poly cuz I was like uh oh!

Did you get your motor problems sorted out? It didn't sound like it was hitting target WOT RPMs in the video.

EZ I did get all the motor stuff worked out. I actually Polyed the dash peices with stuff that is meant for marine use.The side panels are polyed and then wrapped in the fabric which is water resistant and is the same spec stuff that came with the boat in 74. My SWMBO has the inside track on the fabrics and will be redoing the Bimini that came with it. I cover the thing year round so I'm not too worried about the side panels or dash. That top peice for the dash was a pain to get in.

That was the 3rd time I had taken it out. The first time it ran like a top. The second time one of the wires from the rectifier snapped and a plug wire boot came apart. What you were hearing in the video was me running low on fuel and with the bouncing it likes to do that. But once all that was figured out she topped out at 37 on the GPS. I have to do the water pump before I take it out again. The issue with that 1986 85hp Force is that I cannot drain the oil properly do to the fact is has a pipe fitting type of drain that is stripped I'll just retap the lower unit before I drain it to get any metal shavings out. They only did that for one model year which was 1985. I figure someone blew the lower unit and put an 1985 lower unit on it. I think once I get the lower unit off and do the prop shaft maintenance I might eak out another MPH or 2. I'll also get more speed once the thing gets a new transom and I redo the splashwell as it likes to pickup alot of liquid hitchhickers from those locations. Other than all that I am looking to find a parts motor and keep it going as long as possible. the motor weighs about 250 lbs. which is pretty light for an 85hp and it moves out. It likes to cruise at 28mph with abot half throttle and it decent on fuel.

JA glad you enjoyed the ride. The Tick was one of my favorites in my 20's the battle cry of flat ware. SPOON.

I can't wait to get started on the transom and repaint the boat. I am currently gathering the parts and supplies to get this thing going again.I already picked up some additional interior parts to finish it up a little better.

Battery switch (PERKO) so I can relocate the batteries up under the bow and have one for starting and one for ACC. The switch allows you to charge both batteries at the same time. Then when you stop you can switch over to the ACC battery and not use the starting battery. I have 2 6gallon tanks and 2 batteris which is way to much in the back of the boat. These like to sit low in the back already. So I'll have the 120lbs of battery in the front and the 300+lbs of motor,fuel and gear in the back.
2 6LED interior lights one for under the dash and one under the splash(Cabelas)
Another battery box
3 position switch for anchor and running lights.


I figure I can do that stuff now while I wait for it to warm up.

I also have to get new tires and bearings for the trailer so I can tow it more than 6 miles with out worry.

Sorry for the rambling just got the fever. I want to go boating and fishing NOW.

Thats one sweet Holiday... you wouldn't happen to have a template of that top dash part would you. mine was all mush when I got it I have no earthly idea what it even looks like....

I used the old piece that was in there as a template and then the SWMBO burned it in a bonefire after we got all the new wood in the boat. If it warms up this weekend I can take some pics with measurements so you have a better idea.

It's covered with 1/4" grey closed cell foam and the foam is glued to the dash then float the naugahyde over the dash stretch it tight and then staple it down with SS staples. It took 3 of us to get the curve tight with no wrinkles. The wife came up with an idea she'll template the existing dash with paper and mail it to you. Just PM me your address and will have one out to you shortly. Do you need the side panel template also?
