I picked up a motor for free the other day, gotta love craigs list.
I want to put it on my 16 foot colman canoe. there is a side mount motor mount already attached to the boat. I guess my question is... Is that size motor crazy to run on a canoe?

I doubt that your side mount is rated for that much of a load.

Re: 2 stroke 5HP tohatsu on my canoe

I ran a Yamaha 4HP(48lbs.)on my 17 ft canoe with a small transom on the back and that motor along with my 210lbs of weight in the back was a bit much. I put some rocks/sand bags/whatever in the front to help but it was some rear heavy. With a passenger up front it was better. I sold the Yamaha 4HP and went back to using my old Tanaka 3HP(26lbs) and it's just a lot better. If you just have to do it, then try a PVC pipe tiller extension so you can sit more forward, but then it's harder to reach your shift lever? Good luck and be careful!

Maybe add a PFD personal flotation device, just to be safe!

I'd say five horse is too much for side mount. My dad's got a 5hp Yamaha on the back of a square stern Grumman canoe. Same issue as robert and he uses water and gas cans for ballast. He's also got a little Johnson 2hp which is small enough to hang off the side bracket on his lighter fibreglass canoe.
