This is related to a post I made in the 'Non-repair Outboard Discussions' area (http://forums.iboats.com/non-repair...r-winter-storage-worries-ie-theft-632394.html)

Is there a better/easier way to remove my 2001 90hp 2-stroke from my boat, than to pull the whole motor/bracket/etc off of the transom? (ie, removing the through-transom mounting bolts). The point by which the motor is attached to the bracket (seems to be a combined attachment point, tilt pivot and steering mechanism) appears that it might be one way, but I have no idea if that's possible or advisable. I have concerns about removing the through-transom bolts, from the perspectives of weakening/damaging the transom, increasing the chance of developing a leak/seepage type of problem at the holes, as well as the overall PITA nature of getting to those bolts from w/in the boat.

Anyway, if anyone has any thoughts/suggestions/advice on potentially removing the motor from the boat, I'd be interested in hearing them. (BTW, this would be for the purpose of storing the motor for the winter - not based on a need to work on the motor, run it off the boat, etc.)

Thanks!

Re: 2-stroke 90hp motor removal?

I cannot speak about the possibility of the motor being stolen. It is not worth a lot, being 12 years old and only a 90HP motor. There are theft-proof nuts you can install on the thru bolts. This will stop an amateur.

Pulling the motor off is no big deal. Need some sort of hoist or two strong friends. Removal of the thru bolts is no issue. Use some silicone caulk to seal them when you reinstall the motor next spring.

To remove the motor, disconnect electrical, fuel, steering, shift and throttle cables. Now secure flywheel to hoist or have two friends grab the motor. Remove the thru bolts. Hoist her up, or lift the trailer tongue and sit her on the skeg, and have your friends drag her to the garage.
