2 stroke oil has an ammonia smell

I purchased 5 gallons of Evinrude 2 stroke oil, pomagranite in color. It was one of those dealer yardsale things where you bring your own container and they pump it out of a barrel. I noticed that after my container had sat in the sun for a day I poured some out to add to my oiler tank and I could smell a hint of ammonia. Smelling the container it was pretty strong. Is this normal? I had never noticed it before.

My first question would be ~ what container did you use and what was in it before?
If it was a "used " container, the amount of contaminant is likely miniscule, but if it was my motor, I wouldn't use it.
But I would also go back to the dealer and see if this is a normal smell for their product; there may be additives that give off an amine-type odour.
I've never noticed it in any oil I have used, but i can't say that I've been close enough to notice....or bought a volume like 5 gallons.

The container was mine and had only ever had gas in it. I am inclined to discontinue use of it since it was only $6 a gallon. The drum the oil came from was labled from BRP.

I wouldn't ditch it just yet, but I would want irrefutable proof that the smell is normal for that product....if I couldn't get it, then I WOULD get rid of it.

what flavor of evinrude oil?
probably xd20 if color is an indicator and my memory hasn't gone south.
xd50 goes for about 18-24 gallon
xd100 about 35 (I think)

had some evinrude oil and a couple of other brands and yes i smelled that smell of ammonia.not to worry.

I did notice a faint ammonia odor to the XD 30.

My Quicksilver oil has a very slight amine smell.
So slight I would not have noticed it if I had not been deliberately "looking" for it.
