Dingbat, not sure where you got the idea that your gonna need to re-power anything in 3 years, or even 5-6 for that matter. A person with a 2 stroke that needed to be replaced after 1,500 hrs, didn't do a very good job of taking care of it. They can go well beyond that if taken care of and run right, I have seen plenty go into the 5 or 6,000 hour range.

My newest 2 stroke is 10 years old and shows not a single sign of being tired, with well over 3,000 hrs on it.

My opinion on this, and any other of these 2 stroke VS 4 stroke posts will always be 2 stroke. I've seen way too many burnt valves and timing chains break to ever feel comfortable running a 4 stroke at a constant 5,000 RPM or higher, the way any of my 2 strokes will do without a struggle.

Define taken care of and run right.

My 200 HP Ocean Pro has been a good motor but it's getting tired and just plain wearing out at 2100 hours. Starting to see a lot of wear in the cooling passages and I've already had the heads planned to resolve a leaking head gasket.

If I fished offshore everyday and had to rely on this motor day in and day out to get me out to the fishing grounds and back it would have been replaced already

I vote for 2 stroke...Etec. If you buy Yamaha remember that they no longer have yr models...your "new" 2008 may have been mfg several yrs ago but sold as a "new" 2008 at 2008 prices. The mfg date is stamped on each motor so is easy to check. What a deal...for Yamaha. Old technology selling at new technology prices!

Re: 2 stroke or 4 stroke?

hello,
i have done some recent study on 2 stroke vs 4 stroke. my 2-cents:

for an application using 250 hp to run a 21' boat, the concern is not 2 stroke vs 4 stroke, but how soon can i get to the bass today? :D in a motor that big, to me... its just a matter of choice. maybe price. today's big efi 2-stroke technology is very advanced and engines run much cleaner. i think it is personal choice vs proven benefits. as an engine guy, i used to not like 2-strokes. but then i did not know a lot about them. today, i respect them a lot. service my own. and have several. each has its unique needs. for example, a 2-stroke may need a decarb, or port cleaning, but a 4 stroke may have rpm limits to an ideal power band, needs oil changed.

the research i have done says in the 2 stroke vs 4 stroke battle(s) a 2 stroke is not as efficient power and econmy wise in lower rpms. its tuned band is a weaker signal down in trolling speeds. so a 4 stroke/4 cycle... is better in there as porting is more mechanically advantageous the the column of air the engine is moving thru it. but no doubt any bass boat running a 250 hp engine is going trolling with a hi thrust type elec troller.

there is the possibility we may seee epa issues with older 2-stroke down the road, but today i see developments solid for continued use of high efficiency, larger efi 2-stroke outboard engines.

even older 2-strokes in good tune can run clean. my 71 evinrude 85HP leaves no real tell - tale anything on plane, 'cept a pretty motorboat wake pattern behind her... :)

ok, interesting thread. these comments are just my opinion(s)

With service being 1 mile away, I would go with the Suzuki. I do like the E-tec's , but the difference is minimal, and the service convenience would put the Suzuki over the top for me.

The difference is not minimal. E-Tec engines are the most efficient outboards on the market. You get a high power to weight ratio and they have just absolutely revolutionary technology. They also have way fewer moving parts=less friction=less energy loss and less stress on the engine. Go with E-Tec.

how can you say that when a 4 stroke takes twice as long to reach its max HP.

How do you figure that 4 strokes get out of the hole faster?? all that weight and moving parts make it weigh more and reduce torqe ???

Re: 2 stroke or 4 stroke?

I have a 21ft skeeter that I am about to purchase a new motor for. I have a few questions that I can't decide on.

2 stroke or 4 stroke?
Yamaha or Merc?
225 or 250?

Any pro's/con's would be appreciated.
