hello, i am currnetly looking at trying to purchase a new toy, a 2 stroke street bike, the rice rocket style, but this one is italian, so maybe its a pasta rocket

aprilia rs50 ( or rs125 if i can find one)

anybody here ever ridden one of these bad boys?

the rs50 has a 49cc motor, 2 stroke, water cooled, and makes 17hp with a 15,000 rpm redline and a 6 speed gear box. top speed is 70 mph, but it gets to 70 in just a matter of a few short seconds.

anybody know of any oOTHER 2 stroke street bikes?
i really like the aprilia's, they are relatively cheap, i can get used for 1500 and new for under 3 grand in crate with warranty. only weighs 190 pounds and gets 100mpg.

Wow! That is some performance for a 50cc bike! I'd hate to ride a 350! :D

Fun little non-US bikes-(two strokes not legal here-except for dirt, and thats next). I would highly suggest you go to the DMV with some info, as I do not think you can title it for the street. And remember..that 50cc has zero torque. Been riding for 45 years on hundreds of bikes, and don't think a 50cc will get to 70 in seconds, minutes maybe. I have 4 in my stable of "too much", and they are fun, but I live in a place with private roads. Good luck.

I had a 7o something Yamaha R5 350 two stroke (precursor to the Daytona 400 two stroke).
Kawasaki had 750cc, 500cc, 350cc and I think 400cc triples in the 70's as well.
Incredibly quick off the line. Almost to the point off being hard to keep the front wheel on the ground. Fun though.

Dave

Snap, there are a few on the road here and they're a
lot smaller than they look in those ads. I would
think they'd be dangerous in any kind of traffic
since you can't see them above the hood of a regular
sized car.

They are neat, but unless you're itty bitty I would
think you would look like Artie Johnson from "Laugh-
In" or like you're riding your kids battery operated
scooter. As tall as I am, thats what I would look like anyway.

LOL ;) :p

I used to have a Yammy RD 350 like Kenny Poberts road at Daytona. Big airbox, straight pipes, lowered seat, drop down bars, cafe fairing. Fun but incredibly load.

I wouldn't waste my time on a 49cc unless you are 4'9", 110#.

Re: 2 stroke street bikes

you can badmouth the 49cc all you want. its is a reccamended "best buy" from sport cyclist magazine. it also makes more hp than many bikes 2 and 3 times the size.

its also the worlds fastest production 50cc street bike ever produced.

it has incredible acceleration, from the 6 speed gear box and really tall gear ratios, but the drawback is the 70mp top speed, although with some aftermarket tinkering, it can be made to easily produce upwards of 25hp. infact, if you go to the aprilia website, youll see a article on the new land speed record set at utahs salt flats for a 50cc motor set with this bike. over 100 mph on a 49cc motor. badmouth that, if you can. it also only weighs 190 pounds in full stock form, wich can also be lightend down to a paltry 170 lbs.

out

Re: 2 stroke street bikes

sorry ken, but they even make a 125 also. they also make a 250, but in a slightly different style bike, looks very similar to the rs50 and rs125 though, but more of a "naked" version

Incidentally, however much HP they've managed to squeeze out of a 49cc motor, its still a poxy little thing that'll go bang every 500 miles.I've used strimmers with bigger engines. What you REALLY have to look at is quite how much it's going to cost you to repair it when it does go bang, as the technology to get that kinda horses outta that CC don't come cheap! When I was riding 50cc's (in the UK you can't ride anything bigger til you're 17) we used to be lucky if a standard 49cc which was restricted to 3hp and 30mph by law would last 8000 miles. When we tuned them we could get up to 8hp and we used to replace engines as often as tyres and more often than chains! Buy the 125 if you can, or even better buy the 250...or buy one like mine and hang on... http://www.bikersweb.co.uk/2003/storming03/web-gallery/pages/DSC_3056.html

Re: 2 stroke street bikes

by the way, you might like to check out the build quality of the newer sports 2-strokes. I've seen a few of the newer alloy framed bikes with the steering head bearings forced into the frame so badly the frame's damaged irrepairably just by hitting pot-holes in the roads. Its because the upside-down forks are now stronger than the frames so they don't 'give' like they do on older bikes. Check this if you're buying a used bike!

I think thats "ad man HP". A factory 250 Honda or Aprillia GP bike { all out racing bike } makes about 100 hp. If your 50cc can be modded to make 25 then that is 125hp for an equvalent 250, better than a factory bike that gets new pistons every 150 miles or so, $25 per liter oil, $15 or $20 per gallon "gas", etc.
