Re: 2-stroke to 4-stroke converts

I'm willing to bet that the environmental impact of your two stroke is a fraction of the "carbon footprint" of his new O/B. All things considered the Hummer H2 is actually more "green" than the Prius is.

It's amazing what people find to gripe about - when you mix the oil in next time, squeeze a little potpourri in to sweeten the smell :D

Re: 2-stroke to 4-stroke converts

I hate 2 stroke smoke and couldn't wait to get a 4 stroke OB!!! I don't own anything that is 2 stroke. I can live very well without the smoke and noise thank you very much.

With that being said, the 100:1 and newer 2 strokes aren't nearly as bad as the older ones if the oil is mixed right... but some of those old twoies and the ones that aren't mixed with the proper ratio are just nasty.

Sometimes I fish within a good view of the launch and it looks like someone set off a bomb when some of those things crank up, and I think to myself "Our enviroment thanks you for that one Bubba". Then they take off and it looks like a B52 bomber that has been shot down with a couple of engines on fire and fixin' to make a crash landing on the lake!!! Get an owners manual or the proper mix ratio off the internet for you motor dude!

As far as saying something directly to somebody about their 2 stroke, I'd never do that. They're just making the best of what they have and I've been there and done that... and still do it... or they're just in the dark about their mix ratio and I wouldn't know what it was either.

Does synthetic really make that much difference?
I run the Pennzoil 100% Synthetic in my 90HP Yamaha 2 stroke and it smokes less than the old Yamalube and others, but still get a little puff of light blue smoke when you first start motor and when you first get on throttle. Smoke never seems like a problem to me, and never had anybody complain, but if they did, what am I going to do, go out and spend $7500 on a four stroke just to shut him up?....I doubt it! I really like my premix 2 stroke with the carbs!

In my younger days he would have opened the door for a knuckle sandwich.....Now that I have become old and wiser I just pretend I'm deaf. It is alot easier to tune out these A**holes and they can't stand it either!

:)
At my lake during duck season, the dock has huge numbers of 2-strokes unloading. I've never seen the oil slick as describe above.
You have to remember where I am coming from.

I am not talking 9.9-40 hp motors. Around here, a 150HP motor is small. There are lots of boats with 300-500 HP on the transom. Fire up 100-150 or so 150-250HP carbed two strokes at a dock in a matter of an hour or so and you will not believe the mess left behind. Like I said, ring around the water line.

it would have been a good time to drop a nice big juicy silent but deadly one and see if he preffered the smell of natural gas over the smell of your 2 stroke !

Wow............I had no idea this thread would generate so much activity. The thing about it that really got to me is the fact that he doesn't remember my name, and obviously doesn't care to know it. I was brought up to call people by their name when speaking to them. I'm also in sales, so I make it a point to remember names. I think the next time he comes over and tells me to cut out the 2-stroke smoke, I'll pretend I don't hear him. At 60-something, you'd think the guy would be mature enough to say, "I'm really sorry but I don't remember your name" before telling me my outboard offends him.

synthetic oil worked for my 40 Merc, a small bit of smoke at startup, then really clean, and yes watch your mix.

If I didn't simply say no to him, I'd have just ignored his request. I'd like to request a lot of things from people but that is not normal.

Re: 2-stroke to 4-stroke converts

This past weekend, the guy next door came over and asked me not to idle our 2-stroke outboard at the dock as he "doesn't like the smoke." Just a few years ago, he was running a 2-stroke outboard and has since converted to a
4-stroke. He now looks down on 2-strokes and their owners now that he has "gone green." Has anyone experienced this as well??

I hope you told buddy to go pound sand. Tell him that the smoke can go away but he will always have that ugly face. But seriously, the nerve of some people. If he was a true boater, he would understand about two strokes motors. You can tell he is a reformed smoker. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

I agree, it's not worth fighting over. If he said that to me, I might have said, "yep, she smokes a bit, but just can't afford a new 4 stroke motor right now"!...what's he gonna say?...

Re: 2-stroke to 4-stroke converts

I find that my first reaction to that type of stuff is to get very angry and blow my top. Then, I get embarrassed from the nonsense that comes out of my mouth and get even madder, and act even more stupidly. Now that I've gotten just a little bit older, I make it a challenge for myself to try to hold it in, and say something nice (although I rarely succeed). You never know when something really horrible has just happened to a person and they are just trying to displace the anger by enticing someone to argue with them. By having a big knock-down, drag-out arguement with someone they barely know, they can get it all out and not have to really have any consequences because they're never likely to see that person again. I'm probably sub-consciously guilty of it myself!
If you ever see the guy again, you might even try making the comment, "Hey, I'm really sorry my junky motor smoked up the place last time. I think I've finally found a couple of ways to make the darned thing stop smoking...". He'll probably feels so badly about it he'll apologize himself. BTW-----I personally need to put this into practice myself more often! I'm working on it! :)

I would be tempted to add some extra oil to my fuel and REALLY make her smoke. I would idle that motor for hours.

I only start mine up when the wind is blowing in the right direction, my neighbour planted trees right on the fence line beside my pool.

Love the smell of outboard exhaust, brings back memories of when we were kids starting off boating!

I like the just ignore him attitude....nothing he can do. I would have gotten ruffled in my younger days, but I've mellowed over the years.

Re: 2-stroke to 4-stroke converts

My response was alway's... "Yeah sorry, it usually doesn't do this, I must have flooded it". The only smokers I had were all modified motors, the kind that leave a fuel slick because at idle they can't hold fuel in the cylinders.

A stock motor that's smoking badly needs attention and maybe, just maybe, you can take that neighbors remarks and turn it into a positive by getting your motor serviced or at least finding out why it's smoking so badly.
