Cap'n Black,

Search the net for "Bearcat" or "Homelite".
You'll see PLENTY of old "four strokes".

Timing is EVERYTHING!

Re: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke outboards

Say, guys! Chill a bit.

CBM: you are right. The info DixieRay got is wrong. Direct injected 2 strokes are clean and fuel efficient. They do not put out twice the power. BUT: They are not "cleaner" or "more efficient" than EFI four strokes, they are in the same ball park.

Where are the 40, 50, 60 year old DFI 2 strokes???

As DJohns points out, there ARE 40 and 50 year old 4 strokes out there. Great engines! Even if they are carbureted.

Nobody is going to win the DFI 2 stroke vs EFI 4 stroke issue by exaggerating or distorting or simply lying. Time will answer that, and I am betting on the 4 strokes.

I've had both. The so called "2 stroke power" people talk about is simply noise. Horses are horses.

I will never go back to noisy, smelly, persnickedy 2 strokes after owning a 4 stroke.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke outboards

The greatest thing about today's outboard market is that we all have such freedom of choice. A wide choice.

I personally prefer the "noisy, smelly, persnickedy 2 strokes" because I like the power to weight ratio, combined with simplicity, low maintenance etc. Others prefer more sophisticated machines and I may even adapt my preference as time goes on - who knows ?

I see no point in us arguing 'till we're blue in the face. It's just the Ford versus Chevy thing all over again.

JB> No offence intended in quoting you - I just liked the word "persnickedy". ;)

Is this an educational board or what? I always thought that "persnickedy" was spelled with a "T". (persnickety). :D

Re: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke outboards

I don't really buy into any of this arguing, but I figured I'd add my 10 cents worth in, just cos I can :)

back when I was into motorcross, we all used 2 strokes and still do for the simple reason that an 80cc two stroke has more power then a 250cc four stroke.. and it can rev harder.

Now these motors have what amounts to valves in the exhaust ports and other such stuff, btu they are very efficient engines.

I personally don't think either engine type will go away... they might one day find a "non crankcase" method of compressing the mixture and from that day on, you may not need 2 stroke mix..

There are uses for both.. but I am of the opinion that in 10 years time, 4 stroke outboards will probably be obsolete.. but maybe so will 2 stokes.. we will probably have a hybrid of the two.. get the best of both worlds.. power on every stroke, and the benefits of valves over ports and a crankcase full of oil...

hell, we could even be all using rotarys...

In fact, there is a new engine invented and patented in Australia, that is 45% more fuel and emmision efficient then any engine currently in production anywhere in the world.. and its going to be going into production in China first. (australia doens't support its inventors very well.)

but these things are tiny and look like nothing you have ever seen before..

So we don't know how things are going to go.. technology changes all the time.. but from a power and symplicity standpoint. 2 strokes have it.. they are only now (with the mercury and OMC ficht engines) starting to overcome the downsides of 2 strokes.. but when they do, I don't see 4 strokes having much chance.. would you pay extra $$$ for a heaver engine that has more overhead moving parts, that didn't offer anything above a 2 stroke?

The only reason that 2 strokes are not miles faster then a four stroke is that 2 strokes generally have a narrorer powerband then a four stroke.. in motorcross, you have a 6 speed gearbox the purpose of which is to keep the engine in its peak power all the time.. if you could do that in a boat (like with 2 stage props) then they can't be beat for speed.

But at the end of the day, you chose to tool that best does the job for you.

rgds

Frank

DJohns:

Touche' matey. You got me. It should have been a "T". A really good word for getting folk's attention, isn't it?

I wonder why you folks arguing in favor of the DFI two strokes haven'r jumped on the cost of the fours.

I will concede that a good tuner can get more from a 100cc 2 stroke at a bazillion rpm than from a 100cc 4 stroke. I did that sort of thing when I raced karts.

The thing is, I don't race my fishing boat, I want to smell the bluegill beds and hear the birds.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

....oh yes and then there's the extra cost of the 4's LOL.

I've never heard the word "Persnickety" before. It must be an American word - or maybe even a Texan word ?

I searched for "persnickety" on Google.com (as you do when you want to know about something) - and wowee! It's got it's own website  http://www.persnickety.com

In fact there are lots more...
http://fetching.org/persnickety/

...and they say you learn something every day....

Thanks JB!

CAPTAINBLACKSMARINE, Thanks for the info, that will save us some time as we started on 2nd hole. Season's real short up here so it's real time saver if we can get 'em set up right the first time out. I've been a Suzuki & Key West dealer since '99 and people up here love 'em - once they get past the idea of buying a boat called "Key West" in "Downeast Maine". What's the latest word on the new 28'??
