You have to remember, those numbers are for current models. The older 4 strokes got better fuel economy and the older two strokes got a lot worse. Mines an 02, I had a 12 gal below deck tank in a 14' Western with all the trimmings. This past year I ran it every weekend with a minimum of two full throttle 20 minute runs per day and only filled it twice and this Novemeber I drained 6 gallons of gas out of it. I know that's hard to believe but it is what it is. I know that the book says I should get 1.5 gal per hour at WOT but the numbers I get are definitely much better.
Well before this thread had started I had removed the 12 gal tank and replaced it with a 3 1/2 gal because that's all I need to carry on any given weekend and keep comfortably within the rule of thirds.
