Re: 2 STROKE VS 4 STROKE: which do YOU prefer?

I prefer a 2 stroke myself.I am curious though...Do most current 4 strokes use timing belts or chains. The reason i bring this up as the worst thing you can do to a timing belt is to not run your engine.I have heard on cars from several people i know that had a timing belt either break or the teeth shear off.I had it happen to myself as well. The consequence was several bent valves $$$$$. A lot of outboards are left sitting for extended periods ( sometimes several years)We have an import recycler here that will not warranty a used engine unless the timing belt is replaced.

I love the smell of 2-stoke smoke, especially on my snowmobiles, but on the boat too.

In reality though, I'd love to have a 4 stroke outboard, but until the price of used 4-stroke outboards comes down some more I'll stay with my 2-stroke.

google the wieght of the F200 SHO or the F250 offshore and see how close they are coming to two strokes. and with variable cam timing and modern EFI its amazing how much bottom end grunt there is.

Yes and amazing how much complexity there is there. I wouldn't want to be the guy tackling the repair job on that one or footing the bill for it. While I like 4 strokes, I also like things simple on my off-road vehicles.

repairs are simple, footing the bill may or may not be.
not very complex at all just looks that way.
would be different if it used motorola or prestolite stuff but the electrics on the Yamaha are either hitachi or mitsubishi and failure is rare.

Humm tough call each has there benifits. 2 stroke slams the power and is alot lighter weight. 4stroke 8hp honda I owned was very nice but heavyyy fuel sipper. Looked at 140hp honda motor on 18ft crestliner 3000lbs while lowering the whole boat bounces! Im sure it's great runner . My force/mercury weights 195pounds lol 75hp my transom loves it!

Re: 2 STROKE VS 4 STROKE: which do YOU prefer?

My 1968 Johnson 20hp 2 stroke weighed almost 20#'s less than my 2008 Honda 9.9, 4 stroke and ran every bit as well, albeit with a bit more noise and less fuel economy. Given the chance to buy either one of those motors new today at the same price, I would buy the 1968, 20hp over the 2008, 9.9 without a seconds hesitation and thats with or minus 40 YEARS of technical advancements!
Four stroke engines have been around for a 100+ years, they just weren't a good option for outboards for the same reasons that are drawbacks now, weight/complexity and currently the only options to make more hp per pound is to make them even more complex. They may be getting closer in weight in some particular comparisons, but in others the comparable four stroke weighs TWICE as much as the comparable two stroke. Also that complexity comes at a dollar cost as well. If some dazzling new technology emerges for clean running, high hp to weight, low complexity/reliable outboard power, I think that it has just as good a chance to be a 2 stroke as a 4 stroke.

2 stroke until the weight difference across the board is negligible. As stated by others, some are getting close. The new Yamaha F70 is example and is lighter than a new Merc 75 2 stroke and lighter than the Evinrude 75 E-Tec. Those of us with older, smaller, lighter boats have to watch the weight. The transom on my old boat is actually plenty strong to handle the weight of a 325 pound outboard structurally, but the whole boat stem to stern is not designed to be that back heavy, and the handling would be horrible. Gotta keep my old 230 pound 70 running as long as I can.

I prefer 2-strokes for their simplicity and easy repairs you can do on your own, specially if you are on the water.
I?ve heard someone say once: "you can fix it with a hammer! Priceless". Of course he was exagerating, but you get the picture

If it can't be fixed with duct tape and bailing wire... It's too complex for me.. :D :D :D :D

I'd have to say that I'd love to have a 4 stroke for their smooth, quiet, fuel efficiency. But I'm gonna stay with 2 strokes for now because I love being able to fix them myself and get quick power.

To my knowledge,a properly running two stroke causes no more pollution than a four stroke.right or wrong?if its burning the oil then all thats coming out would be the exhaust gasses.

Very true, but many lakes and even bays do not allow older 2 strokes in them anymore.

I'm in California too. Only lake I know of that doesn't allow standard two strokes is Tahoe. Do you know of others?

I don't know what a standard 2 stroke is?

I have no idea how they enforce this, but many areas don't allow older 2 strokes.

Here is a list of what is current:

http://www.dbw.ca.gov/Environmental/TwoStroke/TSList.aspx

Note even Mission Bay in San Diego is a no-no for that old oil burner. And like I said, I have no idea how they enforce it.

I have one of each

a 4 stroke 15hp tiller on my tin can and a 60hp 2 stroke on my runabaout.

They both do their jobs equally well. The only problem with the 4 stroke is that it's pretty tough to pull start for a lot of folks.

Thanks for that link. A standard two stroke is what you refer to as an older one. It's one that is not DFI. DFI engines are allowed on Tahoe and the rest. The problem with them is they are more complex and if something goes wrong you are often at the mercy of the dealer.
