2 stroke or 4? The pros and cons of both?

I'm considering buying a new 40 - 60 hp outboard but not sure whether to go for 2 or 4 stroke. It will be on a 16ft fibreglass runabout, mostly used for day trips, a bit of fishing and a little water skiing with my kids.

I'm sure this must have been discussed before so if anyone can point me towards previous posts then that would be great.

Cheers

Re: 2-stroke vs 4-stroke

The choices are more complicated than 2 vs. 4, scooper.

Carbureted 2 stroke: Cheap, simple, light, smoky, smelly and thirsty. Easy for amatuers to work on (with a manual). Requires developed technique to operate satisfactorily.

DFI 2 stroke: Expensive, complex, heavy, quiet, fuel efficient and clean. Need complex equipment to service correctly. User friendly.

Carbed 4 stroke: Expensive, relatively simple, heavy, clean, quiet and medium efficiency. Easy to work on. Easier than a carbed 2 stroke to operate.

EFI 4 stroke: Expensive, complex, heavy, quiet, fuel efficient and clean. Need complex equipment to service. Very user friendly.

E-TEC: An advanced DFI 2 stroke. Need complex equipment to service. Very user friendly

You should get a cuppajoe before you do a search. There are volumes of opinions and a few facts in the archives.

A lot depends on your priorities. My personal choices in that range would be a 50-60HP Japanese EFI 4 stroke or an E-TEC 60.

Etech 60hp. A 2 stroke marvel with all the pros of 4 strokes and 2 strokes. The best of both worlds.

My choice would be two stroke, Etec, carbed fourstroke, efi four stroke. In that order.
I place premium on the reliability, minimal maintenace and the ease of repairof a traditional two stroke.

Re: 2-stroke vs 4-stroke

The only problem I have ever had with a 4 s engine is when I ran out of fuel the only person wandering by had a Honda and I had no oil so I couldn't use their extra gas. That was my fault and my problem and I eventually solved it. They are great for putzing around in the great solitude up here in quiet and comfort. If I ever have a choice I might just take one as I like to be on the water. Chief .)

Most of us don't allow everybody and their dog to take their boats out everyday. You should be out fishing. Chief ..)

I'm startng to think the same thing. High tech means high repair costs, more things that can go wrong and total dependancy on expensive workshops.... I must be getting old.... :/ :/

So... what is a good, reliable, new engine make in the 40 - 60 hp range that uses the tried and proven technology of carbs and premixed fuel?

Actually I don't mind if it's got a separate oil tank, like my old Suzuki DT40.

Hmm .... Maybe just a newer DT40?

Re: 2-stroke vs 4-stroke

After 2005 the manufacturers discontinued making 2-stroke carbed engines due to high emissions. You can find a new leftover 2005 40-60 carbed 2 stroke on ebay or check your local dealers. I dont believe that they still make engines that you need to premix unless you get down the the low h.p range.(below 30)

Yamaha still sells them, and Merc recently brought some back out after discontinuing them.

Why would you want to go out to sea to change your powerpack? Why don't you do it at the dock. JK Chief Chief 8)
