2 stroke vs. 4 stroke

At this web site I read an excellent article by Mr. Ralph Lambrecht. I would like to see additional data comparing 2 vs. 4 stroke design where direct testing is done. For example, various 115 HP engines tested on the same boat. I am concerned about the reliability of the additional quantity of moving parts in a 4 stroke. Also, how many operating hours before the 4 stroke starts to burn more oil than the 2 stroker. Are the reduced fuel consumption claims for the 4 stroke valid? And finally a comparison of performance characteristics: Speed, Acceleration, and load carrying capacity.

Jim,<br /><br /> I've been running 4 strokes (outboards) since 1974... I have found them to be everything and more than whats advertised... I don't have any experience with the newer 4 strokes because I have not come across the need to repower... Originally I had a 55hp Bearcat on my 17 Whaler, but now run the 85 hp Bearcat... It weighs only 280 lbs, will idle (troll) all day long at 600 RPM (40 minutes on a quart of gas), and it has never been hard to start...I took my brother inlaw and a friend and also my son (4 total) skiing and tubing and fishing for over 8 hours and used 4 gallons of gas... The old Bearcat 85's used a Coventry Climax FWB engine (used in vintage race carsand won the Formula 1 in the 60's)...

I posted a similar subject a couple of days ago. Unfortunately, for most of us that power on lakes (where pollution is more evident), we use lower HP engines (<40 HP). Those new direct injected 2-strokes are NOT available in lower HPs apparently, so to be more environmentally sound, you need to go with a 4-stroke.
