Re: 2" tongue-1 7/8 ball
Let's cut the guy a little slack. Capacity is the issue with 1-7/8 ball and 2-inch coupler as was mentioned so one certainly cannot disregard that. However, a properly adjusted 2-inch coupler simply cannot come off a 1-7/8 ball. Most people have never looked "under" their coupler to see what's there. As a result they don't know the coupler is adjustable and I've seen lots of misadjusted 2-inch couplers on 2-inch balls as well as 1-7/8 couplers on 1-7/8 balls. On any coupler it is the yoke that secures the coupler to the ball. If the nut comes off or the coupler is adjusted too loose it can come off the correct ball as well as an incorrect ball. Is this process recommended? Certainly not but within the weight capacity ranges of the ball, this is not dangerous provided the coupler is adjusted accordingly. That said, you are leaving yourself open for a visit from an attorney should you ever be in an accident -- whether or not the trailer came loose. They don't need much of an excuse to go after your stuff. Now then -- that $5.00 (+tax) ball seems like a bargain doesn't it!
