I have a 79 140hp merc IO and am going to leave it in canada this spring. It has only 50 hrs on it, well maintained, but i think i should at least replace the lower water pump. it is in the lower unit i presume. how much should i expect to pay for this? thanks in advance, bob

PS anything else i should do besides change the oil this spring?

Read and follow the "Winterization" sticky at the top of the forum. Then ask the people doing the job what it will cost.

79... How long has it been since the outdrive, bellows, etc. were checked and/or serviced? A complete water pump kit is $30-40 online, maybe double that in the shop. Labor? don't know as I do all my own work.

I could see a $150? water pump job turning into a repair 2, 3, 4,,, times that much if there are other parts that need to be replaced.

Tough call. On a 40 y.o. motor, never know what you could run into....stuck shaft, cracks, l.u. issues....
A normal job would take less than an hour. I don't know what the shop manual allows for time, but figure $50 for the kit plus an hour labor which should put around $125-ish. Of course, you may as well have 'em change the l.u. oil why they're there.

thanks guys, that gives me a good idea, this thing has been routinely serviced, and shouldn,t need anything else.(famous last words) The bellows appear to be fairly new. just want to be sure on the waterpump thing. i can't wait for spring. i really dislike winter now that i am getting older.

30 year old not 40. You are going to change the gear oil anyway since you will lose the oil when you split the gear housings. So one W/P kit, one outdrive mounting kit and enough gear oil to fill the upper and lower unit. Lets not forget to check the alignment on that antique and grease the gimbal bearing and U joints.
