A friend told me to use 2 wax rings when I re-install my toilet (the ones without the rubber o-ring)... sounds like too much. Anybody have any experience with this? Not a fun chore, don't wanna do it twice.

I'm not a plumber, but I've never needed to use two. I'd be afraid of either cracking the porcelain or partially blocking the drain. If one won't work, you have other problems to deal with like the base ring being too low.

I have seen and used 2 seals on more than one occasion. You need to be very careful seating/pressing the commode down.

I laid a tile floor and used 2 rings on suggestion of several people... Wished I would have used 1 as the excess wax is partially blocking the drain and causing poor flushing

Usually use 2 rings when you have added a subfloor and now the toilet is setting up farther from the pipe than it used to be, or when the first ring has been smashed over time and there needs to be an extra ring added to keep things on an even keel. As LT says, you need to be very careful at seating the commode ... you don't want to crack the porcelan, and you don't want the wax ring oozing into the drain. Slow and gentle.

But yes, it will work when one will not work.

Using 2 is ok if you have room for 2 . Often when a new tile floor is installed and the pipe in the floor isnt raised it insures a tight fit. Main thing is to be sure the wax is soft and dont forse it to seat.Sometimes using just one and then a good bead of rubber sealant around the entire base of the tolet works as well.

The last time I bought one at the orange store they had two different sizes, that is one had more wax than the other.........seems like I bought both just in case and I can't remember now which one I used either but the point is that you have a choice,at least at that store.Ron G

ThumbPkr,

I'm with you. After wife finally "convinced" me to tile the bathroom, I realized that the commode would now be sitting higher than before. A trip to the big orange home center resulted in the purchase of an extra-thick wax ring. Problem solved without doubling up.:)

Be sure to seal the edges of the tile to keep the nasty stuff from soaking into your subfloor and working its way under the tile. If you increased the thickness by at least one inch, two will do.

I think they make a wax ring with a "horn" in it. This is a plastic ring that fits in the middle of the wax ring and extends into the flange... made just for the kind of situation you have.
By the way, it's actually called "wax ring with horn".

I've got two of each kind. The wax only rings are kinda small so I'll probably just use them. If things go south, I have the wax/horn rings as a back-up.

-good tip about sealing around the tile edge... didn't think of that. Will caulk work?

i usually use one with the horn
and one small on top if extra height has been added at the floor leaving the flange to low

Depending on the height you can also use a drain extender so the toilet will mount higher .....they are adjustable up to 4 inches and the toilet is solid....of coarse it is in use with a ring also

Seeing how I keep diversifying to keep busy, I've been doing a lot of work for a plumber lately. It's very common to have to use two rings. Not only on remodels but new construction too.

Just set it down nice and easy and seat the wax.

Remember don't over tighten the johnny bolts or you'll break the flange on the closet colle, you only want to go tight enough. It will break and then your replacing it.

If the toilet doesn't sit flat and rocks a little caulk the bottom with quality caulk (polyseamseal)

I use the rubber foam ones, dont like the idea of the wax rings.

The wax rings are great... I've used 2 before... nothing to it!

Well, there is one thing to it... you won't be able to shower long enough afterward to feel clean again.

You should be able to find the extra thick rings made for those that may have installed tile instead of laminate. I think they are about the size of two rings, just made into one. Check out your local depot or lowes.

Re: 2 wax rings on toilet install?

When I had to replace the stool a few years ago, I came across something from Fluidmaster (I think it was). Can't remember the exact name -- probably something profound like toilet gasket. Anyway, it's like a plastic funnel with a couple different size 'O' rings to fit either a 3" or 4" drain pipe. And if you don't seat it quite right, you can re-seat it without wasting a wax ring.

Since then I've had to do a couple others. I'll never use a wax ring again.

Re: 2 wax rings on toilet install?

I thought about this thread last night when I was installing a new porcelain gravity powered subterranean poop injector. It only took one wax ring, but it was nice to know I could double up if I had to. Good info.
