2 wire tachometer??

Hello all,

I swapped a 1974 Johnson 115 onto my old party barge. Red plug to red plug, runs great, no problems. Since the tach in the old boat worked I pulled it and was going to install it on my pontoon. I located the purple, black and gray wire under the console, the problem is the tachometer only has a ground, send and light bulb wire coming off of it. Where do I connect the "hot" wire? Does it just pull from the bulb socket and it is on all the time?

The pontoon boat is a 1987 Lowes 24 footer. Is the tachometer from too far back to work with this year models controls?

Thanks in advance.

It is ignition powered and doesn't need a +12 volt source.

So I should only have to hook up the send wire and the ground and it will work? In this case, the gray wire and the black wire from the tach sending plug from the wiring harness.

Thanks again.

Re: 2 wire tachometer??

Are you saying the tach was used on the same motor before? Or are you swapping motors? If it was working with this motor before, correct, gray and black and it should work.

However, if the tach is from an old motor, it might not work on this one. But the bright side is, the old tach might be worth some money. People are looking for the old magneto-driven tachs.

The tach is the same one that was on this motor (1974) ...the wiring harness was the one previously on the party barge (1987). Hopefully I just have a connection issue as I had tried to hook up the wires as indicated but didn't get it to work.

Thanks

If it worked before, it should work now. Possible problem with the wiring harness. Or you somehow blew the rectifier.
