What would it take to use a two wire trim motor work on an engine originally with a 3 wire motor?

Along with the 2 wire motor you will need a newer relay system for it to work. It would involve rewiring the switch wires on the selinods now to the new relays. The old selinoids can be removed and used as spairs for the starter, the rest of the wireing should remaine the same. A wireing diagram for the new relay system is very helpful and would save alot of time and trouble. Some manuals have the diagram in them for the new 2 wire system or you might check the local dealer or libary for a manual with one in it.

Thank-you. So, in a nutshell, I would need to remove the solenoids, and replace them with relays, and wire them appropriately? Could the relays be used off the same engine I'm hoping to take the ptt unit/pump /motor off of?

I guess a more important question would be, would a newer unit with the 2 wire motor (98) utilize the same cartridge pump as my older (84) model? If so I could transfer my trim motor if it would physically fit that newer system and not have to worry about it

Yes you can use those relays for the job. As for the motor fitment on the pump, I would think if it looks like the pump housings are the same, the motor should work. If it is a side fill tilt trim unit, it should be the same up to about 1996, after that Iam not sure.

This is what I was thinking. When I was searching for a motor on eBay, there were newer style 2 wire motors that came with an adapter (which looked like a spacer) to make it work in place of the older square motor. So maybe the shaft is longer? I believe that means it would work, but my motor is taller. This makes me afraid that the newer pump may require a longer shaft, though,, since they required an adapter between the motor and pump. Guess ill just have to figure it out when I look at it. Surely installing the newer relays if I need to and wiring them up wouldn't cost that much or be that difficult.
