Hi guys,

The above engines are well stressed under load and I want to give them the best treatment in my Windy 37HT.

I know Volvo has their own engine oil but I have a hard time finding the true technical description of their oil. Liqui Moly (the performance oil from Germany) and Shell I know is very good and reliable oils and they declare technical description. Volvo simply declare Viskosity: SAE 15W-40 - Quality VDS 2(3), API CI-4, ACEA E5.
The two other oils I have attached have better (newer) approvals and I guess they will be a better treatment for the engines. Can someone please confirm I am right and also look up the specifications of the oils I have attached and tell me which one will be the best choice.

Another subject..... I have DP-G drives on the boat. Volvo declares 75W-140 drive oil API GL5 only. Any reason not to use Castrol Syntrax 75W-140 Limited slip API GL5 ? Castrol brand is well known and this transmission oil is recommended for very tough applications.

The boat is out of warranty so this is no longer a thing to consider. I know if under warranty everyone should probably follow guidelines by the manufacturer to keep the warranty.

I am asking these questions only to give the engines/ drives the very best working conditions.

Thanks for a great forum. Hope there is some oil experts out there :)

I'm curious on what you mean by "well stressed" ,, more on that later,,

I'm not an oil expert by any means so I won't even comment on the engine oil. I use Shell Rotella T or Chevron Delo 400 both 15W-40.

Do not use the Limited slip gear oil in your DP-G's. Volvo out drive oil is made to still give good lubrication with a certain amount of water mixed in. Do automotive gear oils have that? In that weight it is hard to find with out the limited slip additive?.
Amsoil marine gear oil is made to still work with up to 10% water,,,but it only comes in 75/80W/90.

Are you over propped? Do you get full RPM's ? What RPM do you cruise at ? Any black smoke?

Thanks a lot your answer.

For well stressed I just mean that the KAD300-A engine is the stronger old generation Volvo - 285 HK out of a fairly small engine volume compared to the new generation D6. The engine does not smoke and I see it well propped.

So overall engine and drive is in very good condition but since I just bought the boat I want to make sure I go with the best lubrication I can find. I noted your lubrication choices and your info on the gear lube makes perfectly sense. I will for sure go by Volvo's own 75W-140 for the DPG.

Thanks again.

Howdy, K-2 has it covered, I'll just add use any synthetic GL-5 lube in your DPG and you will be good. As mentioned previous don't use limited slip stuff
