Re: 20 amp fuse keeps blowing

If this power fuse blows only when you turn the key to the START position, remove the 3/8" terminal wires from the solenoid, then retry (with new fuse installed) turning the key to that START position again. If the fuse still blows, there is a short in the wire leading from the "S" terminal of the ignition switch to the 3/8" nut solenoid terminal.

If it does not blow, then either the solenoid or the starter is shorted out.

If the fuse blows simply when you turn the key to the ON position, some component or wire is shorted out that leads from (connects to) the "A" (accessory) terminal of the ignition switch. In this case, finding the problem would consist of a matter of elimination...... disconnecting items until the fuse no longer blows.

Does the fuse blow when the key is simply turned to the ON position, OR does the key need to be turned to the START position in order to have the fuse blow?

Re: 20 amp fuse keeps blowing

that is the one position. is there anything connected to the ignition other than just the motor? tach, radio, lights?

What color wires and how many are attached to the "A" terminal of that switch?

Re: 20 amp fuse keeps blowing

just solved a similar problem with my 70 HP Evinrude - used a brute force method that's perhaps a little dangerous, but was very effective. I replaced the fuse with a screwdriver bit and check for heat and smoke in the wiring - turned out one wire in the harness had worn through just where the wiring passes through the motor housing - smoked pretty good when it was able to get some real current.:)

A little dangerous? You're extremely lucky that the short wasn't in the fuel sending unit.

Re: 20 amp fuse keeps blowing

I understand this is an old thread hopefully it pops up on your email but basically what's your saying is disconnect all the wires from the 3/8 nut on my starter solonoid and turn key then undividually connect them to it one at a time till it blows or leave my starter connected and do one wire at a time ? Man I hate electrical problems lol
