20 Foot Mariah Talari "listing" question

Hey guy's,

Newbie here, I'm looking for some help on a recently purchased Mariah Talari bowrider. My question/problem is this, when turning the boat, it "lists" terribly toward the direction you turn the wheel, my thought is that it needs some trim tabs, although having boats in the past, I have never seen a model do this as badly as this boat does. The boat gets up on plane rather quickly, the previous owner installed a 4 blade stainless prop, the "top end" is rather pathetic, with a 5.7 chevy, it should do well over 50MPH yet it barely does 47 MPH. Any suggestions out there? If your thoughts lean towards Tabs, which ones seem to do better than others? I'm not interested in automated tabs, just something that will allow me to go back with a 21 pitch prop (currently 18 stainless) and eliminate most, if not all the "listing" issues.

Thanks in advance,

Scott James

i personally like smart tabs. have you tried adjusting your trim. what are your wot rpms, with the prop you have. you need to solve the set up problem, and it may solve the rest. does it have a hydrofoil on the outdrive? if so get it off. you don't say how old it is. could it be holding extra weight? water in the foam?

Yes, there is a hrdofoil on the outdrive, a rather wide one at that, the boat is a 94 model, I seriously doubt it is "holding" water. Yes I have tried the trim option, does not affect the "driveability" of the boat, this boat feels VERY unstable as compared to others I have owned, it doesn't feel "secure" in the water, rather squirley if I had to come up with one word to describe what I'm feeling.

Thanks again in advance,

Scott

i bought a 19 foot boat with a hydrofoil on it. it was tremendosly squirrelly. took the hydrofoil off solved the problem. the foil was push the back of the boat too high, even when trimming, and turning the foil was digging in causing drag.

Dump the hydrofoil and get some tabs. That dumb thing is probably all of your issue, speed too. How big a boat is a Talari? Define "automated" tabs. Smart Tabs are kinda automatic in that you just leave them and go. I would call manual tabs Bennett's with the basic rocker switches, and they make an auto system, so I am little confused.

BTW, welcome to iboats!

Regardless of what the hydrofoil manufacturers say, they create too much lift at higher speeds and therefore drive the bow down. What you are experiencing is " Bow Steering". You are riding on the keel which allows the boat to lay over in turns. The hydrofoil can also cause a list to port. Your rocking on the keel like a teeter totter.

The lack of top speed is also caused by the excessive stern lift at higher speeds. What you do not know yet is how much extra fuel you are burning because of this bow down attitude.
