20 ft cuddy cabin tow in

i have a 20ft cuddy cabin boat my question is how of a big outboard motor i need to install as a back up to get back to dock if my inboard fail out in the ocean. meaning how much hp power of a outboard do i need to install in my boat as a back up.

You don't need a second 'get-home' motor.
Keep your primary engine maintained properly and subscribe to an in-water towing servive like SeaTow or TowBoat/US. They are worth the money and cost way less then an outboard.

i was just asking cause i have a 55hp johnson in my back yard maybe its to much for my boat.could i used the 55hp for my 20ft or not or i really need a smaller hp.

55 would be too big for a back-up. Bet you can sell/trade for something that fits better.
