I have a heavy 14' aluminium boat with a 20 hp that takes a while to plane with two +200lbs guys. If I change my prop from 10 x 13 to 10 1/2 x 11 can I expect to get on plane quicker or will it not make much difference? Will it also greatly affect my top speed? My boat cruises at 21-22 mph with or without a passenger.

I'd rather buy a new prop than a bigger motor.

I think you would see better results with Nauticus Trim-tabs than you would with another prop.

I was hoping to avoid trim tabs. I think they will mess up my sonar transducer. As a last resort, could I expect to see any difference with a hydrofoil wing installed on the motor?

Actually, it doesn't matter. I'm not putting a hydrofoil on my motor. If a new prop won't make a difference then I'll live with it until I have to get a new motor.

Go to the 11p as lomg as you're able to still move reasonably well at WOT.

Re: 20 hp hole shot

Is the boat heavy or just loaded up with floor, casting decks etc?Is it a good big 14 footer?
When I changed from my 15 ft 25 hp utility to a 18 ft utility with the same motor I got better performance.
The only thing that stayed about the same was empty top speed. It performed much better with a load especially planing with a max load when the smaller boat couldn't with the same load.Just a thought when it's time to upgrade to a bigger boat. You might be surprised with the change.

Its a big 14' deep and wide. About 250lbs before the full floor, casting deck, batteries, fuel, etc. I ran it with a 15hp and got the same top speed as the 20 hp, but the 15hp wouldn't plane with 2 people. I could use another 5 hp, but I don't have it. I think I'll try an 11p Rascal prop. iboats has them for sale at a reasonable price.

Thanks guys.

Re: 20 hp hole shot

Just an update.

I tried the new Rascal cupped aluminium prop on my boat and it did exactly as I'd hoped. I got on plane much faster and I now have better turning and reversing. Top speed seemed unaffected.
