20 hp lower unit interchange

Hello everyone, this is my first post, but I've been lurking for several years. I can usually find my answer by searching but this time I need a little help.
I have a 19733 20hp merc with a bad foot, wil a lower unit off of a 1968 9.8 fit, i have a chance to pick one up cheap but will have to buy site unseen. If not could someone tell me what to be on the look out for.

Hi Brian

In an answer to your question your replacement idea will not work, an 18 might work but definatly now a 9.8 the torque will snap it your better off ordering the unit part by part, or finding a similar sized motor with a good lower unit, get them cheap if the motor is no good hehe i know from experiance

i new the motors were built on certain "platforms" but wasn't sure where the breaks were. ok back to cl
