20 hp lower unit

I just bought a 20hp 1968 mercury. The lower unit is cracked. I have access to a tig welder and am capable of welding it my self. How hard is it to take out all the gears ect? Will I need any special tools?

You need a manual, You will need a spanner to remove the carrier nut, Then the carrier and prop shaft pull out, non't lose or misplace the shims or you will have to reshim the unit. Take the w/ pump apart, remove the impeller from the shaft. The reach in rhe hsg and remove the pinion nut and removee the shaft Watch for shims, the pinion will fall out along with fwd gear. If need be need you may the fwd gear brg.

If the crack is behind reverse gear toward prop leave carrier in unit!!! If not the weld will draw the housing and nothing will fit back into it. Got the tshirt on this one!!!
