Re: 20 MPH Slow!

The motor shot comment was tongue in cheek. It seemed you were unwilling to even try cleaning the hull to see how things improved.

Based on your stated symptoms, a missing cylinder sounds extremely unlikely given all else is working correctly. You are true in your assessment that you can hardly tell by sound if a V8 is missing on a cylinder, or even 2. However for it to still be producing to 4800 RPM without the prop half out of the water is not normal unless you propped down like 4 inches.

Something still doesn't seem right, and you would really need to confirm your tach, as that is the most important gauge on your boat when troubleshooting mechanical problems. For instance if you stated it was only getting 3200 RPM you would have had more responses toward missing cylinders, etc.

Glad you figured it out though.

OK, so what are the current WOT numbers?

hull growth disturbing the waterflow enough for the prop to lose bite, and landing at 4800 was just a coincidence.

Still standing by this, had you cleaned the hull and WOT tested we would have been dealing with an rpm at the 27-28mph speed of around 3k (or slightly less). Aeration allowed you to spin a diagnostically irrelevent 4800.

Regardless, I am glad you are getting it sorted out. Given the complete lack of care this boat is getting, you should probably also look into things like filters (oil and fuel), seawater pump, drive lube, gimbal bearing, u-joints, bellows, and engine alignment.

Anyway, get it out of the slip and enjoy your work :D
