I have a completely stripped out 20' fiberglass hull here if anyone can use it. It's only a bare hull, but I hate to just take it to the dump. The lower hull is in really nice shape. It would make a great hull for a custom fishing boat. It's got very tall sides, and is made of very thick fiberglass, its about 1/2" think where the tank vent and bilge throughhull fittings were. The transom is at least 3" thick, maybe more. It's an 8' beam, V hull and it had a Chevy V8 and a stern drive. This would make a great boat if you added a set back plate and a pair of outboards. The rest could be built anyway you see fit. I can't have it here for long, and it will most likely get taken to the dump early this week, so if theres anyone interested, let me know. I considered doing something with it myself, but I just have too many projects and not enough time. It was an open skiff style boat originally, I salvaged the drive, fuel tanks, and electronics for another boat. the top half is still on it, but it can easily be removed. I can snap a few pics if needed. I can picture this being built as either a center console or a pilot house style boat with a little work and imagination. It would make a very strong, roomy fishing boat. I do have a title for it as well. The gel coat is in great condition and has good gloss and shows little to no age. The color is light tan with brown stripes with a black bottom.

Here's a pic of the hull

It's sitting on a trailer, that can be used to move the hull, but the trailer does not go with the hull, and is not for sale.

Nice lines -- I'd be surprised if you didn't get some bites.

pull it down to the corner, and put a sign on it , FREE BOAT. Not Trailer. I've done it several times, then just tow it to there house, and push it off the trailer. save me the Dump fee.

Put an add, with picture, in the Free Section of Craigslist in your area. It will be gone in a nano second and it costs you nothing.

Re: 20' Sea Ray Hull - Free - In NJ

I listed it on craigslist, in both the free and boat sections.
Good idea!

It's got a few responses, but nothing serious yet. Most didn't seam to read far enough into the add or understand that it's just a hull. One guy wanted to know if I would garrantee it to run and last the summer. I made it pretty clear that it was a bare hull, just the lower half to build on in the ads. I have had to repspond to many that it's a free hull that's in good shape, nothing more, nothing less, no trailer, no motor, no drive, no batteries, no tank. Just a bare hull.
It consists of the lower hull, below the rub rail, the upper is still there, but if I were building on this, I would most likely cut most of that away and start over, especially up front. It has a partial floor, down both sides, but it's not the main floor, its the area that they filled with floatation.

If it was me doing this, I would flat deck this boat building in several storage compartments and maybe an in floor live well. I would cut away the upper bow plate and continue the inner ledge area all the way around, build a center console and add four pedestal seats, two at the console, two as fishing chairs. This set up would have oodles of space, it's a wide boat with lots of room. I would put two fuel tanks in the floor on each side, two 50 gal. tanks would be fine but there's room for much larger tanks.

The bottom line is that it's a really nice lower hull to start with, if I had the time or room, it would be on my list of projects, but I don't and I have enough projects started now to last the next 10 years.

If I had a place to put it out in full view, I would, I am too far off the main road here and they frown on corner sales like that. If there's no takers, it will either have to go to the county dump or get cut up. It's not the fee that I am concerned with, I just hate to scrap a perfectly good hull. It wouldn't be as bad if it were all beat or damaged, but this hull is in such nice shape.

To give some idea of this hull, it's sitting on a common V bunk trailer now, with the bottom being about 12" off the ground, the top of the rear rail is at least 6' high on the trailer. When standing inside, on the sub floor that remains, the sides are just above waist high to me, and I'm 6'4" tall. There's enough open floor space for me to lay crossways and then some on the floor, I was able to crawl up into the forward compartment to remove the tank and windlass and had room to move around. There is probably room to put two long 80 gallon tanks on each side beneath the floor in this hull. Thus allowing for a flat deck floor with either a pilot house or center console.
The transom is solid, and one of the thickest I have seen in a boat like this in a long time. It looks like two layers of 1" thick plywood, sandwiched in glass on both sides. It is visable where the gimble mount was. I would simply fill the hole, reinforce it with a full sheet of wood and resin, then add the outboard mounts. There is plenty of strong healthy structure to tie into on the inside as well. Of course, you could always go back with a stern drive, but I think the room and power gain with twin outboards would far justify the work.

Re: 20' Sea Ray Hull - Free - In NJ

Total email count so far from craigslist is well over 100, but about half are asking if it runs and will I include the trailer for free too.
I told one guy that I would include a free trailer but have to charge a $1100 loading fee. I haven't heard back from him.
The ad states, "THIS IS A BARE HULL, no motor, no drive, no interior, no tanks, no trailer. Just a solid lower fiberglass hull to build on."
But yet they still ask if it's ready to fish or how it runs. I take it not many actually read the ad. I have had at least 30 emails wanted to take it for a test ride, and another 20 asking if I garrantee it to be sea worthy. One even wanted me to deliver it over 800 miles away for free.

Re: 20' Sea Ray Hull - Free - In NJ

I think that one may have emailed me, there's been so many it's hard to tell. Jackson is about 2 hours or so north of me. Definintely too far for me to deliver. This is about the limit of what I would even tow locally with a small truck.

I am amazed at how far away people email from, either not realizing where NJ is, of they really don't understand what a bare hull is. The ad clearly states no anything, yet I constantlyget motor questions. One guy emailed, said he was local, then when he called his caller ID was 900 miles away. Then he wanted to know exactly what repairs it would require to make it usable. Another called only wanted to know how much weight i thought it would carry and how much work and money to make float. He wasn't worried about a motor, just that it could carry weight. When I told him I had no clue and a lot had to do with his skill level he insisted that I give him a quote. I told him to call around I'm not a repair shop. He called back several times insisting that I pin down an amount. He said he was right around the corner but his phone number ID was not local.
The more I pressed him for what he intended to do with it, the more agitated he got. I finally told him to go elsewhere, and that It sounded like he had no business looking for a project boat if he has no idea what it takes to make a boat float. It sounded like he wanted a barge, not a boat and was insistant on either me giving him a price to seal it up and make it float, or on where and when it could be done and for how much.

I could only imagine what he wanted to do with it.
I got the feeling that I would see the result on the news or something.

It's definitely gotten some attention, but no serious takers. Either they don't realize its a bare hull or they are from too far away.
I think out of all the emails, only two or three might be for real or at least half serious.

I didn't even think about oars an option, I could add a set of our locks and rewrite the add as a row boat. I hate to see the size of anyone that could row this along. How about a giant sized pedal boat? Just add pedals!

Sounds like in interesting adventure. Maybe your first plan of taking it to the dunp was not such a bad one afterall. Interested to see how it all works out. If you do manage to give it away, you can tell them about this site!!

Good Luck!!

Re: 20' Sea Ray Hull - Free - In NJ

I got three calls today all saying they were on their way, but none ever showed up. I can't believe how far away the calls are coming from. The closest so far was over an hour away, most are out of state and a few were way out of state.
I just hate to just scrap a good hull. If I wasn't so jammed for space I'd probably put it out back upside down for future use, its one the best canidates for a custom boat I've seen yet.
The transom would take so little to convert to a set back outboard design, and doing so would make a very rough water worthy boat out it. (No outboard cutout). The lines and design of this hull look great to me, and its built like a tank, it's got no flex at all even thought its stripped down. The fiberglass is that thick and sturdy. The transom would take so little to seal up and mount too. It's already super strong with the extra thick wood reinforcement.

So many of the calls were assuming that it was only missing the motor, when they hear it's a BARE HULL, they shy away.
It's not just a matter of tossing in a new motor, I removed everyting, since I was planning to take this to the recycle center, I removed all metal and all wiring, as well as the gimble mount and engine mounts. There is no metal on this hull now other than the base mounts from the railing and the rivets that are holding the top plate to the lower hull. If it were me building this, I'd toss the entire top plate and start over, if not, at least cut away the forward portion enough to make use the full size of the hull. The bow plate like it is would be a waste of space on a fishing boat. The best part about this is the lower main hull and how heavy it is.

I'll give it till Monday, if it don't go by then, I'll cut it in half and take it to the county recycling center.

The stringers look like they are fine. I removed the actual walk on floor, I actually salvaged some fo the marine plywood for another project, it was that clean. What remains is two light outer runs of thinner plywood that has a light coat of either heavy paint or resin on it. There's a 10 in circle in that up front where the built in ice chest was thats soft, but not through or soft enough to go through. I haven't torn that up, I figure it's covering any flotation this may have. What I can see of the stringers along the inside of the belly storage area all looks good. The thin plywood is broken in the shape of the motors oil pan just ahead of the engine well, but that had no support in between to begin with, I cut that area out so I didn't trip in it while I was working inside. The rear section and stringers are covered in heavy fiber glass and are hard as a stone. They connect to the transom which is also solid.
This was covered in shrink wrap when I got it, only the rear section was ripped open, so the last owner took some sort of care of it. The interior which I made no effort to save wasn't bad either, but that's gone now. I had to cut appart the forward cabin or dash area to remove the forward tank.
To give an idea of the height of this hull, the boat is sitting only slightly high in the bow on the trailer, I am 6'4" tall and have to stand on something or pull myself up to see in the boat. The gunwales are above eye level for me, roughly 6' tall. Those are tiny 12" tires on the trailer too. I was using a 6' ladder to enter and exit the boat while I was working on removing the tanks and controls.

I am very interested. Is there a good way to contact you to figure out some transportation. I have a truck and can pick it up if we can come to some agreement on the use of the trailer. let me know.

thanks,

Re: 20' Sea Ray Hull - Free - In NJ

Silveraire, check you PM list.

I have a few guys that said they will take it, most are pretty far away, one said he will return tomorrow, but the I can't say I haven't heard that before this week. He was the only one that actually came out and looked at it.

The trailer rolls but isn't really up to a long trip. It's got a broken backing plate banging around behind the drum, mismatched wheels and a damaged bow stop. It did just make a 160+ mile trip here though the way it is.
I don't think there's any problems with the wheel bearings or anything else, but the one odd wheel is rusted on and I wasn't going to break off the lugs till the new wheels and hubs get here. That will be a project once we see the end of this 40 degree whether outside too. I was glad we got that warm spell last week and I was able to get the parts I needed out of this boat.

the backing plate is a flat plate the brake mechanium connects to.
