i have a 1997 200 efi merc on a 21' checkmate. Boat is 55 - 60 mph and shoots out of the hole with 1 or 2 people. But with 4 or 5 guys the boat will barely plane. I also can't pull a slalom skiier out of the water. I would think that something is wrong. I thought i would have enough power not to worry about this. Bad cylindar? Water in gas? help

It depends. How doed it run? If it runs smooth, there is probably no water in the gas. Do you have a water seperator that you check? Have you done a compression check to see if you have a broken ring or two? What is your max RPM's with 1 or 2 people in the boat? Should be 52-5600 rpm wide open (in the water). The more people in the boat is more load, the more load, the more your rpm's will drop off. Sound like you might be proped for hole shots, and not at top end. Try a different pitch prop, and see if that helps. If you are running a 21" pitch, try a 19" and see if that helps. You should be able to pull a slalom out of the water with no problems with a 200.

wide open im doing about 5500 rpm...boat runs smooth and i did a compression check at the beginning of the summer. I don't think it has changed since then. The weird thing is that it get stuck at about 2100 rpm when under load and dosn't sound like its even trying to climb. Like it can't shift to the next gear. I also changed the water separator and no difference. Again, when only a few people are on the boat this dosn't happen. It also feels like it is getting worse as time goes on. Help<br />Thanks
