200 hp Evinrude problems in reverse!

My 1980 200 hp Evinrude is having problems shifting into reverse, forward is fine but shifting into reverse clunks or slips. Like I mentioned it shifts fine into forward and runs great but reverse is trouble, any ideas before I have the lower unit dropped?

Remove shift cable at the motor. Shift into reverse manually. Same problem? If not, may simply need adjusting. If so, probably time to break her down and inspect the clutch dogs.<br />Good luck

Had the same thing happen with my '89 200. Ended up being the clutch dog I believe. The gears were rounded off so it would not engage.

Well guys, the lower unit needs $1200.00 in repairs. I have a short shaft 200 Evinrude XP, will the lower units interchange?
