200 hp mercury cutting out on one side

i have a 94, 200 hp mercury outboard xri. at ldle it will loose spark on one side every 4 or 5 sec. so it sounds like it's reving but it's just that side kicking in and out. i went and cleaned all connections(ground and other) on the motor and then all the way to the batteries. this seemed to help but not fix the problem. please if anyone could shorten my search process i would greatly apreciate it .

your engine has 2 switchboxes on it,1 controls 1,3,5 cyls and the other controls 2,4,6 cyls.if your prob.is at idle look at the boxes

I've had similar symptoms (more than once!) with a failing power pack. One side gets nice and hot and the other is cool, never running. Intermittent power pack failures can be brought on as the components heat up.

Are you sure it's one "side" and not 2 cylinders served by one carb? I also had a situation where one of my 3 carbs (135 v6) had a clogged low idle (pilot) jet. I cleared that by dosing an aux tank heavily with Sea Foam and letting her run (and smoke like crazy) until the clogged jet was cleared. It worked for me but some folks are wary of doing that as a gallon of 50:1 mix with a pint of Sea Foam in it is no longer 50:1.

do you have a source for those "swithboxes"? I need one for my motort and I thought they were called power packs???

hey jethro,welcome...... you'll learn that the merc.side of the fence will call them switchboxes and the johnson/evinrude,omc,bmp peeps will refer to them as powerpacks....same thing,same purpose.
