Did you set the idle timing, and check the wide open throttle timing, engine running, in water. Engine needs to be out of Quick Start to set idle and final timing. Quick Start advances the timimg 6 degrees, out of Quick Start timing is retarded 6 degrees to idle timing, when engine reaches operation temp.

Yep did that. Disconnected the quickstart and grounded it. WOT was checked at cranking speed using the Joe Reeves method.

What is your idle timing now, and your timing at 5000 rpms?

The idle timing was around 4-6* quick start was connected but it was already warm, but I dont have the timing at 5k.

Idle timing looks ok, If you get the idle smoothed out, you raise and lower the idle rpms by changing the idle timing. I think the range is 4-8, out of that there other problems. The final timing still needs to be checked at 5000 rpms, Reason, as the voltage rises in the stator it will advance the timing a few degrees, sometimes as much as 2-6 degrees depending on the stator. You are probley close, but right on the mark is better

I fixed the needle seat washer problem and checked timing again. Then I took it to the lake. I adjusted the idle timing and it idles like a champ now, althought it looks like it is around 2* ATDC. The bisect point is also not lining up with the roller anymore. The WOT timing I am not sure about. I did the J Reeves method. I checked with the quick start grounded, unplugged, and plugged and it gives the same reading on each, which is about 14* BTDC. But what makes me think it isnt correct is the timer base only moves at most a 1/2" before it contacts the stop. This also has the stop nearly as far foward as it goes. The motor is idling great at around 1000 RPM in neutral and 750-800 RPM in gear, actually a little better than it ever did. It will accept fuel pretty well in neutral, but is very boggy in gear. I cant even get it over 2000 RPM.

The motor is a 1994 Johnson 200 Venom. It dropped a wrist pin dowel at idle after making a run down the lake.

Just for clarification, what is a wrist pin dowel?

The pin that holds the rings in place on the pistion. Piston ring dowel might be the correct term.

OK you set the timing according to Joe's instructions, now you need to do a linc n sync, to get your carbs set with the timing, this is the reason the roller does not line up. it is under Synchronization, in your OEM Johnson manual. it is a step buy step procedure.

I did the lyn and sync again 100% as the OMC manual stated. It still does the same thing. It wont get over 2000 rpm in gear. In neutral it will rev to the moon and not bog down.
