200 Johnson compression

Looking at a boat with a 200 ocean pro and the motor hasn't been run for a while. When they did a compression test by jumpin the starter because the switch key is gone they could get 90lbs on one side and a 90,65,70 on the other side. I was wondering if this would change if I lubed the cylinders with some WD40 or something like that. or would you think this just needs to be rebuilt with compression like that. Any help would be appreciated thanks...

Hi John,<br />I think that I would try some OMC's engine tuner, let it set for awhile then try it again. You wouldn't have much invested and that would tell you if it was just stuck rings, or really needed an overhaul.<br />Just a thought

are stuck rings pretty common on two stroke motors after they have set for a while. I don't know how long it has been since this motor has been run, so maybe it is just stuck rings. I am going to look at it tomorrow I haven't seen it or even got to talk much about it, but will try to find out every thing I can. How long would I have to let the Tuner set before I tried it again ? and Thanks for the reply

Thanks for the Reply (Almost) <br /><br />can do mechanic work but have never worked on a two stroke so don't know much about them. I would think with the oil mixture it would be a little less likely that the rings are stuck unless it has been setting for a couple of years without being run, but that is a possibility though. I know nothing about the background of this boat other than it was repoed and that means the person that had it probably didn't take care of it or it may also mean that it hasn't been run for a long time because they didn't have the money for the go juice.

I guarentee you that rings on 2-cycles can be "overlubed", and especially boat engines. In cool/cold waters, you can put your hand on top of a running 2-cycle; they will never run hot. That's why it's so important to use oil sold by boat manufacturers (in many circumstances anyway): those brands will have a more complete combustion than other brands, even those marked TCW III. I know many on this site have had good results with other-than-Evinrude, Mercury & Yamaha oils, but when in doubt....<br />That being said,Almost-retired's advise is good; there are lots of products to break up the sludge and once it's cleaned out, you can evaluate it easier. May be a real bargain if priced right.

What made me a believer in engine tuner; I had just come back from an OMC school in Sunrise Fl. and the instructor told us about it as a new product. When I got home a friend called for over the phone advice, I asked him if he had fire on his small merc, he said good fire I next asked him what his compression was and he said that he didn't have any. So I said o no sounds like an over haul but I had just heard of this new product if it works that it would be a cheap fix. He tried it and as far as I know the engine is still running.

Went and took a look this afternoon and I found a couple of sets of plugs laying in the boat so my guess is someone has had some sort of trouble with this motor. The motor would turn over good but didn't check for fire, The boat was a little rough but could be a nice fixer if the price is right. got to make an offer and thought I would think about it a few days to make sure I am making the right decesion, If all I had to do was get the motor rebuilt (no bore or new pistons) about what would it cost! The Key is gone so without the switch being on I know it won't get fire.

John H,<br /> You can still test it for fire if you have a remote sterter switch. Unplug the big red cannon plug under the hood, hook up the remote start switch to the starter solenoids terminal where the positive battery coble is attached to and the other lead to the termo enal that has the yellow red lead attached press the button and check the spark.

Thanks I will try that and see if it has spark. I need to call and see if I can get a rough estimate to see what it would cost to rebuild before I go back and then I would have more of an Idea what to offer but thanks for the advice. I have really enjoyed this site since found. Sure am getting educated.

Hello John H.<br />Here I go again, probly giving more information than what you might want,but usualy when I'm figuring for an over-haul I figure max. $200 per hole this will usualy cover all parts and machine work then my labor on top of that.If you are doing the work ypurself you can usualy get by cheaper.<br />Maby this will help with the desision making
