2000 125 hp elpto (Charging to much) problem solved !

I just bought the boat and was going through it making sure everything is doing what it should before using it.

2000 Mercury 125 hp ELPTO
serial # OG998508

@ idle it is charging 26 - 30 Volts
So I bought the 6 wire regulator thinking it had to be bad ! And I still have the same problem. Idle @ 26 - 30 volts and anything over idle goes 40 and more Volts !

Any Ideas ?
Thanks

Is this reading taken at the battery or at the regulator/rectifier while disconnected from the battery?

Without a battery connection most regulators cannot 'sense' battery voltage and default to a very high charge rate/voltage. Sometimes a poor connection between the regulator and the battery can cause this.

This reading is at the battery with a multi meter !
I found a few answers in the stickey's I am going to look at tomorrow for a possible solution.
Connections being one possible.

If I am looking at a stator replace, Is the sierra red stator a good choice over OEM mercury ?

Thanks for any input

Are you sure the meter is correct? Very hard to charge a wet cell battery to that voltage level and would kill the batteyr very quickly. Easy enough to check it on your tow vehicle to make sure you are not chasing ghosts.

I have already thought that it might be the muti meter, I checked it on my vehicle and have a correct charging rate . Meter is correct.
I did the con check on the stator and it appears ok.
The new volt reg changed nothing !

Have you checked all the connections, including battery connections. They need to be clean and tight.
Also have your battery load tested, not just tested with a volt meter.

Might also have a look at the link below on your particular charging system.

Ooops, wrong one. Try this one for the charging system.

Thanks for the links, and help
Sorry for lack of info ! Here is a list of things done up to now.

All grounds and connections removed and cleaned and replaced, none was corroded !

Stator test done as described in the mercury service manual, checks out OK.

voltage regulator replaced

battery is in fact brand new just installed, Interstate group 27 marine cranking battery.

When I check voltage at battery just cranking not running I am getting 17 -18 volt reading.

I am going to do a load test tomorrow and see what I get.

I hate to do guess work and start spending money on process of parts elimination, But this one has me stumped !

Have you pulled the flywheel and inspected things. Especially the magnets in the flywheel? If not, you might want to, before you start the motor again.
I'm surprised you haven't blown up a battery.

Bump TTT
Update and still open for discussion:

Stator checks ok
new volt regulator
all connections cleaned (No corrosion was on them)
all wires ok (None burnt or open)
Battery new (Load test good)

Could not remove flywheel with my crows foot puller 1/4 bolts did not want to do it, I will have to buy 1 1/2 inch mercury type puller to continue with flywheel removal.
at this point I am scratching my head with one hand and my... with the other:confused::confused:
any ideas anyone ?

Problem solved :D

Finally got flywheel off !
DonS Gets the cigar, thanks for your help ! Installed another flywheel and problem was solved, although there was no obvious problem, I had a friend that had a bad motor with a flywheel, and while I had it off I said what the hell and tried it. Problem solved
Thanks for all the replies and help.
