Do all Mecs make a slight gringing noise shifting into gear? I've talked to a couple of people and received mixed answers. Mine does, and I need to know if this is normal. The idle is around 750 to 850 rpm's . Next is it normal for a this year and size to take a while to start the first time of the day? It may take me 4 to 5 mins to start regularly. I'm new to the Merc, I've own Johnrudes in the past, so I need a couple of honest answers thanks.

That engine has the small Inline gearcase on it. These have to be shifted pretty fast or you will get some grind. All units will have some type of grind shifting. Do you have a Hot foot or regular controls. Easy way to start merc's are: trim down to little under motor being level, pump bulb, advave throttle 1/4 way, turn key on and hold in for 10 seconds, then crank engine while holding in, when motor hits quit pushing in on key and crank without choking it.

Re: 2000 150xr6 Questions

It took me awhile to figure out how to cold start my XR4. The above procedure is what works for me, also. I noticed that having the engine level is critical. When it starts, keep the idle up for about 10 seconds. That's all it takes to warm it up.

Now I get it started in 10 seconds in the morning. Instantly after that.

The gears are not synchronized like automotive gears. The shifter is a dog clutch, which is metal to metal square teeth in or out period. You have to shift them smartly, and they will clunk, but the shock hub in the prop will absorb it all if the rpm is under 1000. If you let them rattle, you're knocking miniscule particles off the clutch dogs. After awhile, they will be round and not hold in, and are expensive to replace.

hope it helps
