Bruce, Charlie is leading you to a problem with intermittent fire. Total loss of fire on a plug won't cause smoke because the cylinder never burns the fuel. It would also be accompanied by a fuel sheen on the water.

Intermittent firing is one of the hardest things to troubleshoot. It's hard to tell if it's your meter or the component. You really need a scope to see it clearly. Most of us keep our scopes in our back pockets.. Mines a Visa, some prefer Master Card.

But before you start throwing parts at it, check that TPS setting and if that isn't it, then have the injectors serviced. Those are things your should be doing on a regular basis anyway.

A dealer is going to conduct the same tests that we are advising you to do, only he will be charging you $$$.

A scope is an ideal tool, however, not too many guys are fortunate to have one at home.

A 'tiny tach' can be a valuable tool in diagnosing intermittant spark issues.

Using the inductive pickup tach to check RPM an EACH cyl while running the motor at a stable that speed where the condition exhibits, it easily shows any difference in RPM on any mis-firing cyls.

If it shows only ONE cyl faulty then suspect that ignition module, but if TWO cyl's are failing which SHARE the same trigger, then suspect the trigger.

Is there a way to test the TPS without having the TPS test lead assembly P/N 91-816085?
Thanks
Bruce
