My engine just stopped on me and wouldnt restart and when I try to crank it all it does is turns over and backfires. Software showed a code 17 fault which says something about alternator voltage being low. Code # 17 number of events 5
Alternator voltage below expected range refers to the circuit that powers the ignition and injectors*
Last event at 525 hours total engine hours 538

First thing to do is check the CPS to make sure it's okay and not broke or rubbing.

It could be a stator issue, but more inclined to the EMM providing the problem first occurred during running.
With the 55 volts circuit too low, injectors will not fire properly.

Crankshaft Position Sensor that controls timing/injection based on the crankshaft position. Mainly an inductive coil that 'counts' all the small tabs on the flywheel outer edge.

Is that just under the flywheel an how do I test it?

When you crank the mtr over do you get a reading on your tach ??

The CPS does not give the Tach signals.
To test, you need to hook up on a comp and run the 'timing verification' prg.
It is located in the plastic cover pointing straight onto the flywheel from the outside.
Pos #29:

The CPS is what gives information to the EMM which generates the tach signal. If the CPS does not work, the motor will crank over but there will be no rpm reading from the tach and the motor will not start.

Before checking the timing verification (offset), the timer pointer orientation procedure has to be performed first and it will also indicate a sheared flywheel key if that is what happened.

If CPS 'dead' no back-fire and a stored, probably hard code, as well.
I have however multiple times seen the timing been totally out due to induction interference in the CPS leads, but mainly on the 150/175.
To get to the bottom of this problem, an OEM workshop manual as well as the diag software is needed. Not easy to play around with loose guessing on the board without proper info concerning the engine status as well as an EMM print-out.

Re: 2000 200 hp FICHT backfires

Does it have a flywheel key? Two times I took it out it had a squeak sound from what sounded from the top of the motor, while it was running I shot some WD-40 around the shaft just under the fly wheel and the squeak stoped after awhile with it running on the water it started squeaking again did it in or out of gear, just before it died on me when coming in from a few miles out when I slowed down to no wake it seemed to shutter a bit at low rpm/speed but was fine when I gave it some gas in gear. After I stopped and fished for awhile and restarted it went to take off and it just died and wouldn't restart, I took off the cover and looked at the top of the engine while cranking and I almost swear I saw the nut spin on the flywheel not real sure because it was dark but it looked like it. I tried to restart it after a few tried it finally did but then died again and wouldn't restart just backfire. It backfires because it's out of time correct? I can't run the timing verification without the engine running. Aside from that what's the best way to test for the stator function producing enough volts? I have checked the battery and connections and they are all good the battery fully charged reads 12.84.

So what's the best way to find out if it's broken? What would cause it to break? Thanks

Loose nut may cause it to break.
Remove either cyl 1 spark plug or injector, turn engine until piston is at TDC and check that TDC on flywheel aligns with pointer. If not, remove flywheel and check.

Not yet....just making sure I would know how to identify it

Re: 2000 200 hp FICHT backfires

There's a metal pointer that overhangs the flywheel. There should be a "T" mark on the flywheel that corresponds to TDC for cyc #1. The mark on the flywheel and the pointer should coincide if you're flywheel or pointer has not moved. The picture shows my old (broken) flywheel with the pointer and white mark at the "T" point.
