Anyone no if these are worth anything or are they known to be problematic?

The 2001 and newer are better deals as most of "bugs' were worked out.

Ok, I was looking at a pre-owned one that's for sale (I think it's a 2001) but the owner says it is a funny motor. Sometimes it starts fine and sometimes it takes forever to start but after it does it's fine even sometimes didn't start and left for an hour or so then finally starts and a couple of certified techs checked it out and had no luck sorting the prob. Any ideas?

those motors are good but... they like spark plugs proper oil and proper service.
If its hard too start check\replace plugs check the start assist circuit
check fuel pressure. also battery must be fully charged. And check crank shaft position sensor for proper air gap.

From what I have learned is all the spark plugs on all ficht motors need to be indexed. Open end of plug at electrode facing injector. 3 o'clock on port bank and 9 on starboard bank. If Not done they will foul faster, run rougher, hard starting.

That's somewhat true, by 2001 OMC built the head with a deflector for the injector, so indexing wasn't as crucial, but was still advised. It's not just 3:00 and 9:00, it is a little more invloved than that, and you have a little margin of error on indexing, also I think the objective is to keep the gap out of the injector spray.

These Ficht's like a lot of CCA, I think a minimum of 1,000 CCA is suggested for easy starting, make sure the guy has the right batteries in it, a regular old deep cycle aint gonna cut it with a Ficht.

The gap "must" face in the direction of the injector, wont work if the gap is straight away from it.
If the injector is 12 oclock the plug gap can't face between 4:30 & 7:30,......6 oclock is straight away & a no go.
