I have a 2000 200hp FICHT that was running fine then went to start it it did start but went in gear and gave it some gas and it died, went to restart and it would only turn over then backfire it won't start and every time i turn it over it will backfire, any ideas? Thanks

Hook it up to the diag prg, then do a timing verification test.

Also want to add that before it wouldn't start anymore it had a slight chirp or squeak sound when at idle on or out of gear, I sprayed some WD-40 around the shaft just under the fly wheel and the noise stopped but then started back up after it ran awhile and ideas on that? Kinda sounded like a belt noise in a car but very faint. Thanks

Check that the CPS sensor has not touched the flywheel and been damaged.

Someone told me to check the flywheel. And flywheel taper to make sure it didn't come loose....what's a taper? If it is loose will just tightening it fix it? Will I have to reset anything electronically?

Whatever has happened, you need to get it hooked up to a computer and checked with the diagnostic software. That flywheel is not on a taper and key as normal. However due to the heavy magnetism, be careful when removing!

Re: 2000 200hp FICHT Starting issue

I hooked up the software and it says Code # 17, number of events 5, Alternator voltage below expected range refers to the circuit that powers the ignition and injectors*
Last event at 525 hours total engine hours 538

Can I actually check the timing if it won't start? If so how do i do that on the software? Thanks

Re: 2000 200hp FICHT Starting issue

Hook up a timing light and run the 'timing verification' from the soft ware.
The comp will tell what the EMM believes it is, the timing light will tell you the actual timing. Adjust/correct up/down in steps of max 4 degrees until the same. Note that the procedure will have to be repeated several times and the actual timing reading will NOT be the same every time. The difference however should at the end end up to 0!

I can do that without the engine running? Also what about the code 17 telling me the voltage is low on the alternator? Said something they it should be 40 but iit's 24

Se my answer in your latest post.
If first occurred during running, probably an EMM issue.
If first occurred during attempts to start, might simply be a case of low cranking speed.

Re: 2000 200hp FICHT Starting issue

Your alternator voltage being low affects the battery charging and your electric fuel pump. It is the system voltage that should be in the 40 volt range as that is what powers your ignition system and the injectors including the oil injector.

Test the stator per the manual and if it checks out OK, remove the flywheel and look at the magnets and the wiring on the stator. You may have an EMM problem but the other items have to be checked first.
