Have you tried hitting the choke when it starts leaning out?

Checked the vacuum check valve ?

Choke buys it a couple of extra before it faulters but in general if I can tell its leaning up...I shut it down for a break.

Vacum check valve???

jonesg,

OK I think you mean the vacum switch that send my pesky check engine light signal.

Well...I didnt bypass this on the water..I know...idiot.

I just put my vacum gauge on that switch...I would not hold a vacum?!?! It bled down and was suckin air..NOT MUCH...but maybee a prob??

OK now I took the T out and bypassed it entirely. I know now I will not get a check engine light...SO if the lean condition exists I will have to be very carefull.

Test wont be for a week :( busy with fun stuff....Holding out for positive results.

Ohh and if for some miracle this works...that 100 buck switch will be the best money I ever spent.

Well...all fuel line replace with type A double wall. (17' of fuel line)

New Vac switch.

Engine did run a little better but still getting surge at full speed and I did get one check engine light during the aprox 1 hr test.

I think I give up :)

Well...went thru all 6 carbs again. Re-set floats..re-seated High speed jets...new needle and seats. New Racor.

AND....PROGERESS!!!

No more WOT surge...she turns 5800 going 38mph :)

BUT

That pesky check engine light keeps coming back...now its intermitant. It is fuel starve related. My new racor is filling up with aluminum from my new tank. That coupled with 16' of line may just be too much for the pump..I dont know.

I plan to install a racor vacuum gauge, and possibly 1/2 ID fuel line from tank to racor..and move the primer bulb post racor.

Basically I will keep making changes until she works.

BTT

I am about to splash the boat again this season. I am going to remove the racor and run a 20 micron clear inline filter and a vacum gauge in line and take for a ride. I am still all ears on possible "what to look fors"

Good to see you stuck with it.
I would draw some fuel from the tank and look for water and alum.
Can't figga why it has alum. I flushed my new tank with acetone before installing it. It was used but still new. I've learned the whole fuel system has to be scrupulously new and clean.

Take a look at this,
http://bbcboards.zeroforum.com/zerothread/357667-throttle-roller-timing-arm-adjustment-60-motors

Its probably just a bunch of small problems that added up to lean runs.

Yea..Hey..welcome back to my nightmare right? HA!

My Tank was made last year. I figure the shavings are from when they installed the gauge harware or something like that. Its the only thing cut into it. I plan on draining it off as much as I can and then putting an inline pump to it and suck it dry. I will measure what I am able to get out of it. Look for me to bump the thread in a month or so once I have gone for a ride. If I cant fix it its off to the OMC tech.

Cheers

Well...to bring some closure to this thread.....

My new Tank is full of Aluminum shavings. I never cleaned it before I put 80 gals in it. With a vacum gauge installed it is clear it picks up and obstruction which in turn triggers a no/low fuel situation...then an alarm...then a sut down.

My plan is to filter/clean the tank and go from there.

Motor is doing great when you can get it the gas it needs.....should all work out soon.

If you had tried the temporary tank thing back on 9-24-09, you would have found it much sooner...you would have saved on that new fuel pump, too.

Just sayin'

Yes, the whole post takes on a different meaning with that typo...

Timing is not the problem if your bulb is going flat. You MUST resolve that first. Run a 3/8 in. fuel line from a plastic 6 gal gas can with the pickup line just dropped down in the filler hole to a new primer bulb to the fuel pump. No filters for testing. You have a restriction.
Make sure the primer bulb is installed with the flow arrows pointing the right direction.

YEA...I did try the temp tank right from the start. At that point I had lots of problems going on like the bad sync job and the loose carb jet. The whole episode makes me think of "death by 1000 cuts". The motor was new to me @ the time as was the tank. Safe to say I know it inside and out now. :)
