2000 50 hp johnson lower unit?

Hey guys I was talking to a guy over the phone and he was telling me that the year of my engine had a really weak lower unit. he said its a ticking time bomb and it was only a matter of time before it went bad. It is a 2000 50 hp johnson model j50plssmjust wondering if there was any truth to this and is there something I can do to help protect it?

I had a 2001 johnson 50 hp and i went through three lower units...but I was also banging things once in a while along the bottom...so they dont self destruct, they need a little help and mine was certainly not as strong as most. BUT my motor had a V in the model number, which means it had a SPECIAL GEARCASE. ha ha ha

your model number doesnt have the V designation SPECIAL GEARCASE.... so maybe you will be ok
