I've got a 2858 bayliner with the 7.4 mpi mercruiser. Boat starts and runs great, but occasionally dies suddenly. When it dies it's like someone turned the key off. It dies SUDDENLY. It happens at speed, and it happens at idle. It usually starts right back up, but the last couple times it took quite a while (10 minutes) before it started back up. Then it ran great again. Until the next time that it died.

I've replaced the fuel filter twice and I've gone thru several tanks of gas, so I know it is not fuel related. I checked the pressure on the fuel pump and got 40 psi, but that of course was when it was running. I had a guy check for error messages on the computer module but there were none. I cleaned all the grounds I could find, nothing. I banged, tapped and wiggled everything I could get my hands on, but the motor does not respond by spuddering or dieing. In fact, when I start the boat and let it run, it will run on idle at the dock for an hour.

I can't even find a good mechanic that is willing to take it on. They all say..."it could take hours and I may not find it"

I'm out of ideas...has anybody else experienced this? or more importantly, has anybody fixed an issue like this?

Welcome to iboats!

This is actually a MerCruiser, not Bayliner, question, but I'll take a shot: These are the symptoms of something electrical/electronic fritzing out when it gets hot. Alternately, such a gizmo is getting sprayed with water randomly, and shorting out. Any water leaks in the engine compartment?

Actually yes there is a drip coming from a plug on the riser, might be getting close to the fuel pump, but it's barely a drip.
