I have little boating experience and due to medical issues it had been 3 yrs since the last time I had a boat on the water. I bought my current boat a 2000 Sylvan last year and finally got it out this year. After launching I lowered the engine and made my way through the no wake zone and started across the lake. I was surprised at how high the bow came out of the water while running and had only been running probably 5 minutes or so when there was a loud clank and then a loud ticking noise began from the engine. Long story short it wasn't until we returned to the ramp using the kicker motor that I realized I had never fully lowered the motor. I had only gone to the stops where it begins to lower more slowly. I can't get it in the shop for 2 weeks so I thought I would put this out there and ask for your thoughts about if it is going to be an engine or drive unit problem Sorry about the long post.

Oil levels are fine, did not hear an alarm but I wear a hearing implant and it is possible that I missed it with the noise of the motor and wind, no submerged objects. I did a compression check but could not get to the bottom plug. The results were 150, 150, 142 I'm not sure about the 142 as it was hard to get the compression gauge tight in that space.

OK, so you had the motor trimmed to the max. Generally, you can run with the engine trimmed to the max, and if the prop doesn't blow out, it is fine.

Unless the motor is mounted too high on the transom, she should cool fine, even at max trim.

It makes sense to check the motor for overheat. Blistered paint is an indicator of overheat. Green spark plug anodes are as well. Take a compression test as well.

Run it on a flusher or in a barrel and see what makes noise. Noises are usually real bad. Maybe the noise is in the gearcase? That would be cheaper to fix than the powerhead.

sounds likely you have an unrelated potentially bad powerhead issue. maybe the belt slipped i'd check that. hopefully not an interference motor, but that suzuki (I think came from an esteem car originally) vintage probably is.

Well it is some condolence that maybe I wasn't the cause of the issue but that will be of little comfort when I get the estimate to have it fixed. Like Chris 1956 says,"Noises are usually real bad".
