The 2 wires in same harness/connector that connects to the control harness. Black/yellow pin 1, red/ yellow pin 2. i can see them in your photo.

Disconnect the black/yellow wire and the red/yellow wire, turn key on check for voltage on the wires
red meter lead to wire, black meter lead to engine ground. Should be 0 volts.

0 volts to both with ignition off or on, i am telling you the yellow/ red wire from the pp goes to the boat harness not the motor. i think it goes to one of my guages, i have 4 lights on my tach guage,, hot/ no oil/ low oil /and check engine . i believe this yellow wire with red stripe goes to a guage unless it is the quick start wire like guy mentioned. all i know is this one wire is grounded permanently and will not allow my NEW pack to spark if hooked up, yes i left the tan and white wires hooked up my heat sensor works fine. Thanks again i am going to try and locate it today and reply to what i find, good day to you.

SPARK IS NOT YOUR PROBLEM!!! try disconnetcting the fuel hose and running it on starting fluid, spray it into the aircleaner or into the carb .

You are crazy,i would never run my motor on ether!! it has no spark with the wire plugged into my new pack, and the motor has ran all summer there is NO junk in my carbs!! i even checked that just for the heck of it. thanks anyway...

o volts, both have voltage when cranking but motor will not run with the yellow/red wire hooked up to pp. i took it out and it runs the same, 3k rpm's only! this is crazy, it runs with the wire hooked up on my old pp but only runs 3k rpm's, it runs on both new pp without the wire hooked up but runs the same,, i am going crazy for now!!!
i have checked grounds, and all connections,, Remember this all started when it would run for 6 vminutes and then go to 3k rpm's... i would take it to a dealer but that is 60 miles away and all they want to do is throw parts at it like me.. i hope someone can help me, i am leaning towards a bad stator now??

I still do not understand why it will run on old pp with this wire connected and not on the 2 new pp's
i am towing it to kentucky lake tomorrow to have someone else test it, i will be sure to post whatever i find so it may help others someday..thanks again.

Starter fluid (ether) was made for 4 strokes. NOT 2 strokes.

The yellow/red wire goes from power pack to starter solenoid, from starter solenoid to the harness connector. The engine harness connects to the control harness which carries the yellow/red to the ignition switch. I`m looking at the OEM manual wiring diagram as i type. You need a peakreading meter, ohm meter, and wiring diagram to trouble shoot this system. Also don`t forget the diode in the tan wire on engine harness.

The yellow/red wire doesn't appear to be in the same plug on this motor, at least on the diagram I have: http://cdielectronics.com/InstallSheet/113-4808.pdf

He has a new pack, and with the yellow/red hitched up it doesn't spark, I don't know if he pulled the whole plug, including the white/black and the tan wires, or just the yellow/red though. This is about 10 years too new for my experience though.

This is what i don't get, why will it fire on old pack with the wire hooked up and not fire on new pack with wire hooked up?? if i knew this i think i could find the problem myself. i did notice yesterday that the new vro had some sticky stuff around the silicone where the wires plug in, could my new vro be bad confusing the pack?? going to get it tested today.

Re: 2000 70hp johnson help needed testing electrical!!

Well i took it to 2 dealers today and neither one could figure out the no-fire on the new powerpacks unless they both were bad, the first dealer did not have one in stock to try and the other dealer was ran by 2 young men that new less than i do! it was recommended to run the motor on my tank bypassing the vro!! the guy said it could be fryed not giving the carbs enough fuel at wot( yeah i know someone already mentioned this) The first guy said he would just start replacing parts till it ran right! this is to common among dealers from my experiance talking to them. And without a known GOOD pack to use i still cannot eliminate that it's got the rev limit stuck on my old pack, i tested the coil output at idle and wot and they are in speck, i removed the check ball in the permanent mount gas tank, checked the fuel for water, vent hole, going to hook up my remote tank and run it with someone keeping the bulb pumpped also 3 new plugs just for kicks. I still believe the old pack is stuck in limp mode which would so easily explain my problems but if i can recieve 2 bad packs in a row what can i do????? THE NEW PACKS HAVE TO BE BAD AS THEY WILL NOT FIRE WITH THE QUICK START WIRE HOOKED UP,, Correct me please if i'm wrong on this one! And all pins were checked for correct placement and even with the start wire unhooked on the new pack it still will only turn 3k rpm's and that is why the first dealer said it must be something else! thanks for reading all this.Confused on the Ohio river..

Re: 2000 70hp johnson help needed testing electrical!!

So after going over the whole system, fuel, carbs, fuel lines, the vro fuel line from the fuel connector to the vro did not have a clamp on it! When the dealer mounted the new vro they did not use any clamp at all on this line.. i put a new stainless steel clamp on it and took it out today, was i surprised when it ran like it used to, no miss,no loss in power or rpm's, it started great and i believe runs better than ever!!! I called sierra and they are giving me full credit for BOTH packs, great company to deal with i must say, anyway thanks for the help and i hope to be on this forum for many years asking and giving advice!!Thanks to everyone! Glad you got it running good!! Also glad to hear that Sierra is working with you on the packs, makes me more likely to order from them.

Re: 2000 70hp johnson help needed testing electrical!!

I've been reading through this thread and I don't know if it was mentioned or not but the yellow/red wire from the starter solenoid to the pack is what turns on quick start when cranking. Getting burned on two packs can really be a **** off as I found out over the years with other "New" parts. Good Luck.

Yeah Sierra was great about it, Medart Marine is who i have an account with and they are super too, It sucks that a clamp on a fuel line can send someone into shock, i tell you i was loosing my mind over the electrical part when i got that first pack and it didn't work so i still thought it was that! The old timer at the lake told me to go back over the last persons work and that led me to fixing it..thanks again for the support you'all! oh yeah, still running on the original pack
