I am sure this has probably been beaten to death but I could not find it. Does anyone use gear oil other than the Volvo Penta 75w90 in their out drive? I am going to change it for good measure but that gear oil has gone up about $12 a quart since last June. I got it for just under $16 a quart last June and its about $27 or $28 now. Not worth risking damage but if there is a better solution that I may even be able to pick up locally I would do it.

If you can find 75w90 that doesn't have a friction modifier in it...good luck. I just use the Volvo fluid. It isn't much more than what the auto parts store carries. Buy it by the gallon on iBoats

$30.99 a quart on iBoats. The no friction modify question is what i am hoping some that is already doing it can help me with.

Starting to chicken out - read a couple things about the cone clutch not being happy with other lubes

Been using Amsoil for nearly 10 years in a 290DP

It does fine with cone clutches
