Any one have any opinion on the year 2000 evinrude 50 hp 2 stroke? I am looking at getting a 17" Crestlliner Sea Hawk with this motor on it.
Anyone know if that year had any particular problems?
has it been out long enough to tell much about it?
Any advise would be appreciated.

Re: 2000 evinrude 50 HP 2 stroke quality

the same basic motor has been built for about 20 years. very reliable if maintained.

Buying a boat

1st you need to decide what you want to use it for, fishing, cruising, or water sports.

2nd how many people adults, children you want on board of the average outing.

3rd outboard, inboard-outboard, or inboard power plant.

4th Budget, what you want to pay, and what you are willing to pay, when you find
Exactly what you want.

You can hire a marine surveyor, to inspect the boat, or you can do it yourself.

You are mainly looking for soft spots in the deck, transom, cracks, all signs of a rotten, under frame. You walk all over the deck, that a mallot, or hammer with wooden handle, using handle, tap all over the transom, a shape rap is good solid base, a thud, is questionable base.

The motor should be clean, no spots where the paint is discolored, or pealing from heat, having run hot. (This part for outboard motors Compression should be atleast 100psi, and within 10% of each other,)
Spark on all cylinders, good pee stream, check lower unit for water in oil.

The overall condition of the boat will tell you a lot, as to how it has been maintained.
boat motor combo, A 30 year old may be in better condition, than a 3 year old.

Thanks for your input. I am going to inspect the boat and motor tomorrow. I will run your reply to hard copy and take it with me.

Picking up a compression tester on the way too.

I have had three boats.

16 foot Crestliner Open Bow with 110 Merc I/O (loved this one)

20 foot Crestliner Crusader with 170 Merc I/O (glad to get rid of this one)

15.5 Jayco w/ 50 HP Mercury Outboard. Both 1969. Liked it but just too many old boat and old motor problems.

I like the Crestliner welded seams on their aluminum boats. The one I am looking at is a 1990 and seems to be pretty good looking yet.

The Evinrude 50HP was bought in 2000. I am hoping that it will be the solution to hard starts, stalling, and all the other problems one gets with 40 year old engines.

Thanks again for shareing your knowledge.

I have a 2001 JOHNSON 50 hp 2 stroke.....

after the fourth lower unit repair-rebuild-replace...I found out these lower units had issues.

maybe one time was my fault...the others times it just went.

first two were under warranty..the last two cost $1300 and $750 respectively..

running good now...

motor always ran like a top..started even in the bitter cold right away...

just information ....I like the motor , I didnt like getting stuck though

good luck
