I have a possible opportunity to upgrade my current motor to a 2000 Evinrude 90 HP Ficht. I have read many mixed reviews on the net about these motors, and would like some feedback on here. This gentleman bought the motor 3 years ago and has not used it at all. He also bought it on the "honor system" from a guy who told him it ran like a top. Obviously those 2 circumstances, cause some concern...however the current owner has assured me he will have it fully serviced before we even start discussing the deal. Aside from the obvious things, is there anything specific I should ask to be tested on this motor through the service process? Any other advice to a novice on motors would be great to help me through this upgrade process.

A Ficht is the #1 motor to run away from. That's what put Evinrude into bankruptcy. If it hadn't been for BRP and elimination of the Ficht they would be out of business.

You're only half right. Yes the warranty claims and sales dive from all the defective V6 Fichts put OMC into bankruptcy. However after a couple of years the bugs were worked out. Ficht (and variations on that name, e.g. "Ficht RAM," "Evinrude DI") continued to be sold under OMC and then BRP, then after a few years the technology evolved into Etec.

And the problem never affected the V4's, so the 90 Ficht is a good bet (as long as it wasn't neglected, something to look out for with any used engine).

buy any V4 Ficht with confidence, they are fine motors (as long as it all checks out of course) Fichts have a very bad name and resale will suffer, so bare that in mind if you buy the motor, do not listen to all the dooms dayers about these motors.

Agree with the last 2 posts, just check it over or have it checked and run the XD50 oil and you shouldnt have any problems. :)

I stand corrected. I thought all the Fichts were bad.

Ficht technology was not single handedly responsible for OMC's demise but it did have a hand in it. All BRP ETEC motors of today are based on Ficht tech, it's improved of course.
